Hi Ric,
I have had a few of these converted ammo tins made into fuel tanks. mine also had different dated ends. Our jeep had one in place of the back seat as a long range tank.

The original lids were fully sealable and water proof with a central rotating clamp system and o-ring, same as the 40mm ammo boxes issued to RAN ships (which were also galvanised). They were stackable on the ends. Now I'm told they could be used for long-term storage of items in an O2-less environment by lighting a candle stub inside, then sealing the lid on. The candle burned out when the O2 within the container was used up.
