I'd suggest delicately that this man was unfit for service. Month after month waiting in a replacement holding unit, only to be sent to a brigade and returned before the invasion. Then sent packing.

He may have been sickly. He may have been chronically unwell and not treatable. He may have been a discipline case. He may have been an administrative burden. Or, he may have been utterly unwilling to soldier but just barely good enough not to get into trouble. Or, he may have been unable to train for a trade. Many reasons, but at the very least he survived!
