If it is of any help, Rob, my 1950 Chilton Manual states the engine serial number for 1937 to 1939 V8's is stamped on the crankcase back of left cylinder block. In 1940, for some reason, the engine number was placed on the vehicle frame only, by the steering post (seems vehicle SN may have equaled Engine SN). 1941 to 1950 the Engine Number was on the right-hand side of crankcase, just above water pump.
