I would think that with the Boys reputation for "kicking like a mule", that the springs are there to soften recoil.
If the unknown (still missing) mounting assembly was free to rotate in its self, then that would work. Maybe the square is to help it stay tight in the clamps? I would doubt any "field mods" were carried out to mount these rifles.
