Hi folks,
Does anyone have a complete Stacey towing mount? The cast bits bolted to the read armour plate, springs and pintle hook for sale? Or parts? Preferably in North America, but have a drop spot in UK to go in a scheduled Container. Please advise availability and cost. |

Jim, sorry I do not. These are the holy grail and I wish that I never sold the one that I had...
Somebody really should look at having reproductions made of the castings for the bracket arms. The hitch and leaf spring assembly would likely not be too difficult to source as every CMP truck had them. |

May have to see where that leads... I have Lance's to remove to use for a pattern.
Two patterns plus the leafs and the pintle. Loads of pintles around but trying to find the "CMP one". I came across a photo (on MLU) of a late Mk1 with desert water stowage but with the towing hitch. Would be practical to have the carrier with the mod. I wonder if there would be any interest in repros of the "horns"... Jim |

Jim, I think there would be. The leaf spring portion is easily enough to have duplicated. CMP pintle hooks are still around NOS as well as whatever wrecks out there that still have them. The "horns" or brackets as I called them are the elusive bit.

Jim, I had one cast, direct from an original, any good caster can do it in cast steel, the only issue you have is that it's a solid lump, I drilled the cast holes to make it appear hollow. To make a pattern to cast it hollow was just to expensive.
Kev.

British carriers had welded "horns", not casted ones. Much more easier to make a replica. I know its not proper for canadian carriers, just an option.

Casting can be done but it would need a sacrificial wax plug made.. Bens fortay is cast work so will defer to his superior knowledge. It is otherwise an easy enough job though.
Only problem with solid arms is that the carrier will be arse down before you even hitch anything up. Kev might be worth casting as a lump, section the arm and mill out the unwanted material, then re weld the two sections back together. Time consuming and no doubt expensive, but you would get what you wanted at the end.. I will need a Stacy setup for my current project at some stage ![]()

Petr usually Mk2* carriers had casted horns with them , most MK1* carriers had welded retrofitted ones , maybe it has something to do that they where already in the UK , my mk1* had the welded ones on as well.

Thanks for the lead Maurice!
I recently saw a picture of a Mk1 with the towing hitch. I think it wa here on MLU but have to search again. ( i will in a bit) It had the Battery Box of the Mk1 along with the extra POW racks called the "Desert Stowage" that my carrier (and Bruce Parker's) has. I am missing all the tool stowage on that back plate, so thought to make up the towing and place it along with the tool holders. It looks like a welded Hitch support "horns" may be the most correct way to go. Now... does anyone have a carrier with this type of towing support? If so, Can I offer you somethign to take some pics? Measurements would be nice, but since it probably came to the Canadian Stacey hitch, I can probably use those measurements. |

Ive seen wartime pics of mk 1 3" mortar carriers with Stacy towing attachments.
Has anyone noticed that a carrier has an exta riveted plate on the clamping towing leaf Spring ?, it's unique to carrier and not seen on truck towing attachments. All is revealed here : http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/sh...=Stacey+towing

Another thing is that if you look at wartime pictures from Mk1 Carriers with stacey towing arrangements , that the tow hook has flat ends on the handles , compared to the round ones on CMP`s

Good on you Petr for taking the time to photograph, are there any markings on the fabricated ones ? They look straight forward to reproduce. If I had a fabricated one in my hand in the U.K. I might have a go at making a run of them. Mk1 mortar carrier with towe attachment pictured.
