When you add your data plate, Colin, it deserves to be gold plate!

Yes Dave, unfortunately I'm fresh out of gold plate
but I did bolt the side plates on and the front housing. I also put the front shaft in to check its centre with the side curved parts and found a variation of a few mm. The shaft is very good and the speedo helical gears match really well and spins when the shaft turns with no play. That means that the wing parts I put on will need modification. I should have been more careful and triple checked critical parts before I weld them all together. I guess it couldn't all go to plan with out some form of mod . It is not a big job to fix but I will bolt on what ever it takes to get it exact before I weld it back again.

Well that's about it for fabrication. My transmission casing is all but finished. I have put some gears and other external parts on and it's all good.

I am really happy with my result and also glad I decided to go this way. I now need to give it a really good clean, de-burr and undercoat. There are a couple of external parts that I need to make so I'll do them now too.

I have to say that i'm ever so lucky that the gears, shafts and other steel components are in such remarkable condition. The top and bell housing are pitted but again still in good usable condition.

Looks fantastic, Colin. Well done!
Where applicable, any idea what type of gasket materials were used on the original? I am assuming you will go with modern equivalents where needed. Be interesting to see how quiet she is when finally running. That new steel case may absorb more sound than the original. David |

Thankyou Dave, I will use modern gasket material as the old ones were paper. I would think it should be very quite when running.
An interesting one came up today. As you can see by the photo, there are two of these lever stands that bolt to the side of the gearbox. They are tapered on 3 sides but straight on the other. I sat there for awhile and tried to think how can I do that on the lathe. Then it struck me. Any ideas? |
