Bruce, I have the end of one that has been cut off. Your handle will be made of the same tube. I think the old Ford crank handle end, with the tapered square is probably 5/8" dia and fits nicely in the tube?
The idea of the spline, for those who don't know, is that you reverse the handle, when it is being stowed. Then it is not wider than the carrier.
