| 90mm M1A2 AA gun power supply. New guy here, looking 4 info

Hi, I fix up old stuff and have this Caterpillar/Canadian military gen-set. What I do know about it is; built by OR for "Canadian Arsenals Limited", a "Crown Corporation". It's a basic Cat built genny being connected to "G.W. Crothers Limited" in Toronto (largest Cat dealer in Canada). Its 9' long, 33" wide, 64" tall, weighs 4950lbs. Shows 00625 hours and i believe it. Its not locked up as i turned the diesel thru using pony flywheel. Its previous owners after Canadian military were, U.S.Forest Service, Ohio DNR Forest Service. I purchased as result of Government Service Auction. I have knowledge of the Cat and genny part of this machine as i been messing with old cat stuff for 25 years. How can I find out about its Canadian Military history, markings, location, etc? 1 bite at a time thanks 4 any help. walk around video, https://youtu.be/xglWmuK4e7A Last edited by Mike Schreiber; 27-01-19 at 23:26. |

I think I was just reading about these yesterday when I was going thru some old CFTOs. They were to supply power for the 90mm M1A2 anti aircraft gun or for the 501B radar. I'll confirm when I get home tonight.

In 90mm Gun Mode, would one generator be supplying a full battery with all their ancillaries? David |

Welcome to the friendly forum Mike, Nice to see a useful piece of kit with a military history. I wont be any help but like the gen set as a solid unusual piece. Good luck with it.

I think your generator set would be a PU5003 (or a close copy of it) followed by a letter, depending on who made it and what engine is powering it, and who made the generator. If made by GE Corruthers, with a Cat engine, and coupled to one of two different brands of generator, then it is a PU5003A/U (generator by Louis Allis co) or B/U if General electric. A similar generator powered by a Detroit is a 5003C/U (General electric Generator) or else a 5003 D/U if a FATO engineering co. I have attached the front cover of the Canadian Forces Technical Order data summary. I think someone else posted a similar generator to yours on MLU in the past year or two. I remember some discussion about the VAOS number on a Cdn built piece of equipment. |

Turns out it wasn't here, but the posting was on the CSC website: https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/cana...an--t8439.html I see in another photo you listed on the other site, the generator is a Louis Allis Co, so that should make your generator a PU5003A/U. Aside from the two data summaries, I'm not sure I have any other info on these. |

WOW! It is a PU5003A/U (generator by Louis Allis co). WOW! I got more questions now than I did b4. This unit is 1952, is there a older manual? How do i find this/other manuals? How do I find this "other" discussion? Maybe you saw my discussion about it on Canadian soldiers site? May I use your post on my other "old engine" sites? Thanks! |

If you look near the top of the data summary, it mentions it supersedes the first issue dated 28 Aug 1953. Most often the manuals come after the equipment. I suspect yours may have been an early one before the PU-5003 designation came out for these sets. Yes, the earlier discussion I remembered was actually on the Cdn Soldiers Site. Feel free to use my input on your other sites. Attached should be the other 3 pages from the data summary. |
