I would like other OMVA members to comment or ask questions if they have any about the new logo that was presented in a recent email blast to the membership. I posted a rather long replay on our Facebook page if you wish to read it.

Default 2019 OMVA Annual General Meeting - Saturday April 6th.

The quantity of feedback on the proposed logo change has been good, varied, shows that OMVA members are actively involved and care about our association. This is awesome! An email giving details, showing the design and inviting feedback/comments was sent out to members. We are getting a variety of responses but since this is an OMVA issue, we respectfully ask that only actual association members respond whether it is here, on Facebook or by email. As per the notice at the top of this thread, our annual AGM will be held on April 6th. We invite and encourage everyone, member or non-member, to come out and participate. The event is not just our AGM but is also our spring Militaria and Military Vehicle Parts Show.

If you’re not an OMVA member, perhaps you will consider joining once you get to see what we’re all about and meet other members. We understand that physically attending the AGM may not be possible for everyone but a response to our email that shares your opinion on the design would be greatly appreciated. The Executive looks forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the 6th and help us get the 2019 MV started. It was a long winter!

I have no stake in the OMVA's direction, but as a whole the various provincial clubs seem to have adopted the old command shields, the way the OMVA has for the past decades. Although the shields are slightly post-war, they make for a good historical addition to the vehicles. What is the historical background of this new design?

Default OMVA New Crest

Debates about changing Crests and Insignia can be very divisive, as witness the present debate.

Decisions for change should be by consensus; 50% plus 1 is not enough. Until this week most members were unaware of any proposal for a new Crest and have had absolutely no opportunity to provide input.

Barry Churcher's notice of motion does not provide a copy of either the old or the proposed new crest and it should.

Eric Brown is absolutely correct when he says any decision on a new crest should be deferred until members have had an opportunity to discuss. This delay should be for no less than 12 months.

We should welcome informed comment about a new crest from all wishing to submit comments. Developing crests and insignia is a complicated process and the OMVA will need all the input it can get

This crest proposal seems to be a Toronto centric one. As the current approval process is structured, only people who can travel to the annual meeting can vote. What about people from Eastern Ontario. For example, OMVA members who were members of the former Frontenac Motor Vehicle Association.

A mail in vote is needed. This is too important a matter to be made only by those members within driving distance of the Georgetown AGM.

The Central Command shield should be retained. While perhaps not memorable to younger members, it is certainly important to those of us who served under it.

Whatever crest is adopted it should pay tribute to our shared Canadian and Commonwealth heritage. The proposed crest does not do this. The phrase "Keep them Rolling" is an American construct as is the Red Ball Express. Far better to include the very significant phrase "Maple Leaf Up" in the design.

What about the Royal Canadian Army Service Corp (RCASC) and its Commonwealth companions. Its Latin motto is not suitable for this crest but there may be others that are.

Canada and Ontario are officially bilingual. Having some French in our crest will provide the Association with added creditability when dealing with governments.

Putting a tire in the design in effect commemorates tires. Why commemorate tires? I am unaware of any circumstance where Canadian Tires made the world safe for democracy. What about commemorating the CMP; s truly magnificent example of the contribution made by Canada towards gaining the final Allied victory against the Axis powers.

All of this is to say that much work and consultation is needed before any vote can take place on a new crest, if indeed one is even needed.

Default Change to OMVA Logo

Dear Leslie

Thank you for your informative response on FB.

I was very careful to look on MLU, FB and in CMP Magazine prior to posting and never saw any mention of a change to the OMVA logo. If I did miss it somewhere I do apologize.

I am not arguing that there is not a need to change or refresh the logo, just the process how the proposed design came about. Which did not include the opportunity for input from all of the members.

Please be advised that I will be submitting a proposal at the AGM to defer the voting on any change to the logo until the membership has had an opportunity to discuss it and make recommendations.

Respectfully

Eric B
