Thank you for the pics. They answered all my questions about paint and even the placement of the lathe, drill press and vices.

I'm posting in this thread as I found a contract card for Truck, 15-cwt 4x2 Machinery , Type " K, Light"
The way I read this card, is that SM.6050 was the order for the Chevrolet C15 4x2 trucks, and the order BM.V.2276 is for the welder plant sets. A clerk has been adding up the cost per unit. SM.6050 was for Chevrolet 15-cwt 4x2 trucks allocated with WD Census number range Z 5451950 to 5455219. I do not think all 3,270 trucks from this order were converted to KL's, though. Here are some quotes from the Workshop Trucks thread: Quote:

Hello everyone,
my Name is Tobias and I build military models. This Forum and particiually this thread has been very, very helpfull in my research of REME Workshop-Lorries. Does one of you, by any chance, have a copy of the specs for the Type M Machinery Lorry; like the documents posted above about the Type X or KL? --- If this is not the right place for an inquiry like this please inform me. Thank you and Kind regards Tobias ![]() |

That I took delivery of a C60L workshop truck today.
1) Any info and or specs for restoring the rear woodwork would be much appreciated. Also the specs on the metal hinges will be needed. 2) Do the numbers under the bonnet reveal anything to the "code-breakers" among us? (as I cannot get the chassis number to show itself - are they known to be put anywhere else?) I will put progress pix on the restoration part of this forum as they happen - will also put on some of my Morris CS8 when significant progress is made. Many thanks in advance o wise ones. ![]()

8443 under the bonnet is the GM chassis code for C60L and 1942 is the model year.
The chassis number should be left front chassis rail. The small plate is not that helpful either. Quote:

Engine number might help .... just a chance it still has the engine from when it was in service. Machinery trucks didn't do as many miles, or get treated as roughly, as GS trucks.
I agree with Keith re the small plate: it is the number of the front end sheet metal plate (stamped 'WO Front End') so not traceable to a particular vehicle from surviving records. But the date might help narrow things down a bit. Mike |

Thanks Mike - engine number is: WR3925878.
Story from seller was it was used in a shed to drive something via its PTO - which eventually seized. Condition of cab, floor, steps, suspension etc. and general lack of rust supports this.

Hi Dave,
I've come frustratingly close to that engine number: WR3925879, which was in a C15A, registration 141321, and all around your number, but not IT. ![]() The records, particularly for longer-serving special vehicles (as workshop trucks were), are overwritten to the point of being almost illegible, so very difficult to track down. Still, the above gives you somewhere to start looking in AWM126 while you while away the hours under lockdown!! ![]() Regards Mike Last edited by Mike Cecil; 19-05-20 at 16:53. |

Thanks again Mike - I was looking too high and right - where it is on my C15A.
Found it in the same place (of course) as my donor C60L that lives on a farm out west. I see it as: 28443P00478? While I'm feeling lucky - where might I chance across the (painted over) ARN?

Dave
The two flat panels on the front sheet metal below the windscreen, ie both sides. Numbers should be 3 to 3.5 inches high, white paint, five or six numerals. If 6, it will start with '1'. Your truck was built/assembled in the GMH plant in Perth, WA - (the P in the chassis number). Mike |

Thanks Hanno - I can only post these pics I have at hand and give a description as by the time I get home from work it it dark this time of year.
Left pic is C15A - number is between the 2 holes in F/L chassis rail and centred vertically. Right pic is C60L - number is much lower and finishes around forward hole. The pic I posted previously (with a lot of glare from my torch) is the Workshop C60L - the digits are smaller and start right next to the forward spring hanger. Not a huge difference, but enough to throw this novice off, am sure the old hands are familiar with.

Mostly preservation and paint due to being an outdoor pet.
Is about to go a colour change, when 'new' roof goes on, as found out old digger mate Fred worked in one in PNG. 126 is a nod to (according to records) a blitz based at an airfield near me: Jervis Bay.
