When looking for material to replace broken or missing ones, you might look at metal banding.

Pictures no longer needed. Had a good look while dismantling my side curtains. I am going to make some so all frames have them, but I still don't exactly see why these would be useful... The canvas is already held against the frame by the outside metal stips. (I guess that they could all be broken, but that's probably not the case )
