Evening Gentlemen: Popped across this this afternoon. There is a military "stuff" auction here (Burnaby) on March 06. It's a lot of Military "Bric a Brac"....worth having a boo if your bored. Did spot a M8 Barrel Cover for the Armor Boys. Other than some storage dirt, it looks to be in very good shape. It's on page 62, Item 572. Check it out on Direct Liquidation on line Auction. No one has bid so far and the opening bid is only $20.00. Great deal for that price!
Good luck......Robert ![]() |

Hi Robert and Hanno,
I've looked at the covers in that link. It doesn't look like any M8 barrel cover I've seen. If I am seeing the things correctly, the item on the right looks more like a spare MG barrel cover of some sort. I'm not sure what the item on the left is. It looks like it has some heavy leather reinforcing and a shoulder strap/sling. Does anyone else recognise it?

M8 is the designation of the cover, nothing to do with the application.

Standard barrel bag for the spare barrel on a M1919 GPMG. They can be found with C/l\ markings on them.

I phoned today and you can't view the item till the day before the auction, is this worth anything (not that I know anyone with a 1919GPMG). Price is still $20.00.

The one shown is an earlier version than I am used to. I have never paid as much as $20 for the Cdn marked ones, but others mileage may vary.
These days, it will be the guys with the semi auto version of the gun, or the vehicle collectors with a dewat M1919 on the side of their Jeep that will want the bag. |

Which reminds me of something I've wondered about before. In the UK, we say deact as an abbreviation of deactivated, what is dewat an abbreviation of?

Adrian.
I think it is short for, “DEactivated WAr Trophy”. Not certain where this term originated. David |

Davids explanation of the Dewat term is correct, and here in Canada the terms deac and dewat are used interchangeably. I am not sure, but I suspect the term may have originated with the many MG08 and MG08-15 guns brought back and distributed after WW1.

I stand corrected, you are right Ed.
It would be a pain in the butt to use this cover for a 50 barrel as it would require the carry handle to be removed every time you wanted to put away the barrel. |

Yeah, other for inspections, I just wonder how often the canvas MG accessories were ever used.
