Mack military trucks

I have given this subject some thought and decided to incorporate all models of pre and WW2 trucks produced by Mack in the one thread. I hope you will all agree it wil make life a lot simpler to find the thread in future times to add to it. Foe example i noted a mention in the past couple of months re the late Eric Bells Morris 8 cwt can i find , can i hell the Morris was offered for sale at the Beltring show and i had taken some photos the week before to include hence the reason for keeping the macks in one thread. I appreciate of course that some certain types will be placed in the relevant threads such as the 25pdr portee photo i placed in David Hs thread. I am sure a number of members can contribute some items for this one

Dont forget Barts excellent book on Military Macks it was on the Kelcey stand at beltring for£5.00, i paid £24 for mine when it first came out so it is certainly a bargain now

This is really very interesting thread and I am looking forward to see new interesting pictures and comments. Two following pictures show teh Mack NR trucks preserved in two museums, the first is in Overloon (NL) (the same vehicle which was displayed in Zwijndrecht some time ago).

This is a Mack NR with caravan body as shown in Duxford (UK). Unfortunately, it is almost hidden between the asccess ramp and the other vehicle next to it, it would definitely deserve more free space around...

Does anybody have more details about the caravan body origin?

Give me a little time and i will dig out the monty caravan info you require. A number of years ago my mate Geoff Lacy and i did a intensive research into the vehicles used by Monty in WW2 so much of what you want is in there, when i published Model Transport Magazine a few years back i ran a series on the vehicles incuding 1/76 and 1/35 scale drawings.

The last tractor appears to have a number "_52155", and my list suggests it might be L 4952155, from the batch L 4952134-4952858, to Demand S/M 2765, for 'Lorry 6x2 G/S' which my scribbled notes say is for EHU and EHT models. Does that make sense? I have to add that there is a known dichotomy as regards some Macks [NM] which are listed as G/S lorries say, with "L" prefix, but photo evidence shows that after "assembly" here they also carried "H" prefixes for tractors, suggesting a change of role so it could be H 4952155 say. The Bovington record cards drive me crazy in that respect as well.

I have details of some Macks not on the Census List, gleaned from various sources including National Archives papers. Same applies to White-Ruxtell and Ruxtell. As a consequence I have some N Africa deliveries. However I cannot make sense of a lot of my notes now!

The Chilwell census list has that number as a Mack 4x2, I thought it odd when you said 6x2, so just checked the list.

Something is wrong here. The Macks used as Medium Artillery Tractors should be 6 ton 6x6 with a winch. I will go back and take another look at the DVD to see if I can get a better read on the number.

I think the number looks like..252155. Also in W.A.Gregg’s book “Canada’s Fighting Vehicles” there is a photo of the 6 ton Mack 6x6 177wb with the number CL.4252020 on page 126.

1. It was late at night for me, and I was dozing off.
2. I have found inconsistencies in the published list between 6x4 and 4 x 4, etc., as I did yesterday so I don't takr it as "gospel".
3. So Canadian then?

For two more pictures of Mack NR 25pdr Gun Portee see also the thread "Morris-Commercial CDSW 25-pdr portee". The truck shown below is shown in the book The Kiwi Scorpions as a White Truck of the Heavy Section (of LRDG). I would say it is not a White but Mack NR.

Picture below shows vehicles used in Israel. The truck marked with the arrow is Mack, probably B80 Series, 6x6. Does anybody know more details about using the B-Series Mack in Israeli Armed Forces? Also the semitrailers look to me as reworked Rogers tank transport trailers. Any comments?

The Regimental History of the 2nd Canadian Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, that was published in 1945 dose not contain any photos; however, it dose contain sketches made by one of its members. Two of then depict 3.7in AA guns under tow. In both cases the tractors illustrated appear to be Macks.

Yes it is Rich, the british army were shipped a small number direct from the states i think early 1941 this must be one of them. The shipment also included ponton trailers and sets of bogies not sure of the purpose but they do call the sea of sand

I bought a DT 969 and where I bought it was a Mack 1943 RCAF NR 10 ton cargo truck that had single tires on the back and not front wheel drive . I did not get the serial # as I have not got back to take another look .There is no box on it as it was used to haul logs after the war . The original motor is gone as they were going to put a Cummins in it I can buy this truck but I promised my wife NO MORE TOYS .Thats worst than quiting smoking .and I have never smoked .The tires are 1400x20 .I have the Parts book TM-1544 and Maintenance Manual 10 ton 6x4 Cargo Trucks .Where could I find a Mack Lanova ED engine for this truck . An interesting thing is the manuals don't show any head lights for this truck ,just little black out lights There must not be many of these trucks in Canada .This one should be saved .Sorry to be so late with this thread but I have been away alot George

This is the shift plate for a Mack NM 6x6 truck. I bought it back in 1983 at the Warnham War Museum in the UK. Only just found out that it is for a Mack NM, thanks to Geoffrey Maskell (who used to own one).

Some of the military EH models were used in Australia . Years ago I visited a collector in Tasmania, he had a military EH Mack in his shed . Also spotted at the same location , a British army Thornycroft 6X4 workshop truck , Cletrac high speed airfield tractor, and other oddities.
