One of my coworkers in Afghanistan was first generation Canadian, and his father had been in the Wehrmacht in WW2. The son retold stories about how late in the war the troops were withdrawing and chose routes that led through forested areas - so they could fuel their wood gasification trucks. Fight a little, drive a little, cut a few trees, stoke the fires, and continue the withdrawal.
