Right … after I posted the photo on the TWENOT forum, Christian Butijn, who built a 1:35 scale diorama of this scene last year, pointed out the following (translated from there):

  • On the aerial photo below you can see that the Rijksweg (the pale-coloured road) is several metres above the surrounding terrain at the location of the photo, to form a level crossing with the Zandweg. I indicated the photo's location with the red arrow.
On the AI photo, though, the crossroads is at the same height as the terrain.
