Hi

The Downs are a range of hills that run from Beachy Head (Nr Eastbourne) in the east of Sussex to Winchester, Hampshire in the west. On average about 6 miles from the coast.

It was due to be the first line of defence in an invation.

Most of the Canadian troops were billited in the coastal towns etc.
Littlehampton, Worthing, Brighton. And would have to go in land to man the guns etc. Only a very thin line along the coast.

Regards

Chris
