I hear on the grapevine that the Jordanian Army is taking some of their Ferrets out of War Stores and rebuilding them to be re-introduced into service. The rebuild is believed to be a diesel and full auto trannie.
Not bad for a family of vehicles 50 years old and only retired from active service about 10 years ago. It will be interesting to see if something does come of it...... |

Janes International Defence Review Vol 39 May 06 "JAF buys revamped recce platforms"
This article states that the Jordan Armed Forces placed a contract with the King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB) for 50 re-engined Ferret 4x4 armoured scout cars for delivery by the end of 2007. An Iveco 4 cyl diesel will replace the gas engine. Not much else will be changed... KADDB had one on display at SOFEX in March. These "new" Ferrets will typically be used for security duties at airports or vehicle checkpoints. Close recce within armd and mech battalions is expected to be conducted by another Brit retread: upgraded Scorpions. It would be a blast if KADDB offered a Ferret for the upcoming Canadian Light Armoured Recce Vehicle project...

Now theres asking for trouble. You take an obsolete, difficult maintenance vehicle like the ferret and put in the IVECO engine from the LSVW fleet. Hopefully they are going to be putting towbar brackets on the front during the conversions.

In reality, I don't perceive this to be any sort of an issue.
We all know about the massive amount of hours that goes into those tractor drives on a ferret, and you can change all the engines that you like - you can't replace the drive line. What was wrong with the engine in them anyway. Its not like the Middle East has to worry about fuel at 30 cents a gallon. Somehow I don't see that particular group of people being hot-to-trot on vehicle maintenance, and all the tow points in the world won't tow a seized wheel station. ![]() Makes this smiley even funnier :dh: |

There goes the price of spare parts!!! For those of you who think it's obsolete, well, it is. But it is one of the best machines for VCP work, and they do work well when maintained.
I have one, and love it. As for break downs, it's like any other AFV. In my opinion, the CF would be smart to look at an updated version for mud recce, to compliment the Coyote. The troop leader doesn't need a coyote to do his job. After all, he doesn't spend all that much time on the OP screen. A grizzly turret (cadillac gage) on a deisel powered ferret would be ideal. Just my two cents. Dan |

The Grizzly Cadillac Gage turret has been retro-fitted to later versions of the M113. Or, in your opinion, is there not a good mix of wheeled vs tracked vehicles available on the battlefield? My .02 cent question.

Yes, I know about the M113's, but it was just a sugestion open for debate. You are also aware of the CF attitude towards tracked armour.... So given the options, when they were discussing the possibility of using gators or ATV for mud recce, why not use light armour (Ferret).
You could't possibly get a bigger fan of track (I'm ex RCD), "but it's not economically sustainable"....that's what we were told when we lost our Leos. What else is there that's small enough to conceal in a garage. The Weasel has tracks, and the GM Lav division couldn't possibly make anything smaller than a school bus. Next? Dan |
