Bob,
Don't go gas axing it just yet !
I'm sure the subject of correct location and connection of scotches to the frame of the truck have been covered before. I'll check out my manuals, as I know I have seen a diagram showing how the scotches are attached during heavy winching. Basically, for winching from the rear of the truck, the hooks on the chassis by the back axle are used to attach the strops and scotches, which are placed under the front wheels, and the truck is reversed onto them, thus tightening up the strops, and making the whole assembly virtually immovable. Conversly, you should have two hooks (one either side ) by the front springs, which are used to lock up the rear wheels, when you are winching from the front. The hooks you show in your pictures would in theory acheive the same end result, but instead of placing the scotches under the front wheels, they could be placed under the rear wheels.
Quite why all Chevy's had a Ford diff as a winch is beyond me !
