Default Great!

1. That countryside looks as though it is as flat but undulating as parts of Salisbury Plain, although S.P. has grass on it in the bare areas! However, parts of the New Forest near here also look like that when the heather is dried and cut back, etc.

2. My late father-in-law was stationed at Saskatoon, Winnipeg, and Medicine Head during the war at the RCAF stations when doing his pilot training. When he went back to his old haunts with his now Canadian brother, years ago, he was amazed that it is still so much as he remembered it!

3. That number I make out as DND # "40-1-713".

Default 11 cab dash

Here you go Max. It's got those door hold open hooks and I thought they came out with the 12 cabs. I guess they'd be a simple retrofit if that's the case.
In that landscape picture there's six people that live in that view, including the town. There's also likely 75 pronghorn antelope, several mule deer and whitetail deer and two or three moose. People are outnumbered. That suits me just fine.
It'll look a lot better in about a month when everything turns green.

I've yet to see a spare tire carrier in all my travels. I guess that makes them fairly rare.
The C15 doesn't have any rear axles so I checked around and my 1946 Maple Leaf 1 1/2 ton parts truck has the identical rear end. The front axle is the same too. I'll have to watch for the parts the C15 will need. It's too good to become a parts truck.

.....while you wereon this streak of Good Luck...?

Thanks for all the nice photos......... that cab 11 is a rare baby.

Default DND number

Well, we know that DND numbers up to just before 40-1-50 were used by the 1940 Ford G/S trucks, so knock off 650! Production started say in April (Ford) and then assume production figures per day and those intended for domestic use...in the absence of other 40-1- XX numbers, and I know we have discussed theis before, I suggest perhaps summer 1940?

Perhaps otthers can add in any known 1940 DND numbers to compare?

I have been wondering what the plug or socket is above the ignition switch, here is a photo of the one here, I thought it could have been a dash light

That's a socket for a single pole bulb which would make it a
"BULB, 1-1/2 C.P. - 6-8V (Dash and Ignition Lock) (Mazda #61) "
according to the parts manual.
I looked at the remains of another C15 in my yard (very little left of it) and the census # is 40-1-717, only a few numbers away from the latest acquisition.
I assumed the motor in the latest wasn't original since it has the breather slits in the tappet cover and a 4 blade fan with the narrower belt as found in civvy trucks but the parts list says they used all this on the first jobs.
David Hayward, can you make an educated guess as to the possible serial # and engine # range for this truck?

That sort of prairie landscape is what some of us Manitoba flatlanders would call "rolling countryside."

Great work rescuing the relics. Reminds me I have to revisit a C8 I was trying to sweet-talk its possessors out of last year. And there's another "mystery" vehicle in the Interlake I need to check out, too.

Reminds me, I need to update my "parts wanted" list ...

It's seeding time so this making a living thing is going to interfere with the important stuff for three of four weeks. I'll post updates as soon as I get a chance to go for another load. This time I'll have one in the truck and three or four on a 45 foot trailer. That should make for lots of updates. I'll bring the F15A with the roof hatch, the Cab 11 F15A, the carrier, and one or two others.

Default Great stuff

David,

Reminds me of the Monaro in NSW (Aust). Beautiful rolling hills (AND SNOW), like when i was younger.

You have brought nostalgia of 'tin hunts' back and I can smell that dry grass smell in the pictures.

Nice trucks one & all.

Default C15 axles

I picked up those 1 1/2 ton Maple Leaf axles today and they're a perfect fit in the C15 rear end. Yesterday I had the acetylene outfit in the back of my S10 after fixing our harrow hitch so I torched off most of the farmer-added scrap iron off the frame of the C15 while waiting for my brother to finish the field. Now if I move the spring hangers back to their original location it'll look a lot better. I have another roof that's pretty good and a headlight and misc small stuff so won't need much more for it. It'll make a great future project!
I can't wait to get the Cab 11 F15A home now!

I took this pic this morning about a mile from where I took that landscape photo (a couple of miles from my yard) and decided to post it so everybody could see that the countryside isn't devoid of life. The moose had given birth on the slope of the road and got a little bit excited when I stopped to snap a few pix. Notice how the hackles on the back of her neck are standing up. That means don't get any closer if you know what's good for you. The calves had just been born and could barely stand with their knees so wobbly but momma got them to move away from the road anyway.

Great pic! I wonder why mom moose chose the edge of the field and roadside for the calving - would have thought she'd have stayed a little deeper in bush for that.

Well, I came up with another F15A only 15 miles from home and I didn't know it was there. It's a 42 or 43 model and is surprisingly complete. The motor is missing but all the other bits seem to be there. The glass is good and the fuel tanks are too. They seem to be fairly hard to find in good shape.
Regarding the previous comment about the moose having her calf in the bush, "there ain't no bush!!"

Default door number

Here's the census number on the door. I still can't see why the 66 at the start of the number. Anybody got any ideas?
I'm bringing this one home tomorrow. I was going to get a load of the other ones but that has to wait till next weekend. I have the 48' trailer hooked behind our tandem and that's quite the looking outfit. It's about 85 feet long. nip and tuck for legal length.

Default Here's how to haul rusty tin home!

I finally got around to going for a load of trucks. There's a cab 11 F15A in the back of the truck along with a bunch of truck and carrier parts. On the trailer there's two cab 13 F15As plus a cut down carrier. The tracks are rolled up at the rear of the trailer. The blue thing on top of the carrier is a box for a 15 cwt.
I think we might have been pushing the legal length limits a bit with that 48 ft highboy out there. In a few weeks we'll make another trip and bring back the other four cab 13 F15As.

The cab 11 F15A was used as a fire truck for quite a number of years and was well looked after. The motor turns over and the tires hold air. They'd thrown away the doors and roof and modified a few things on the cab but nothing too serious. The frame's had a few gussets put on for various reasons. There's no data plates on any of these trucks.

This one had to wait for the next trip. The census # on the door is L 42-1-2039 so it's an early cab 13. What does the L mean? The motor turns over so it should be easy to get running. It has 1986 license plates on it.
The fire truck has a 2 speed transfer case in it for the PTO to run the pump. The deck under the tank is the remains of the CMP box but I don't know which model it would have been. The frame has been lengthened too so I'll use the frame off one of the parts trucks. When we loaded it one rear brake was siezed up but when we unloaded it it dropped about a foot and that broke it loose. When I make a 2A1 box for the C15 I'll have to make two of everything and end up with one for the Ford too. Either that or turn it into an Umbau-wagon.
The truck on the front of the trailer has a lengthened frame too. It has a 20000 or 30000 pound Garwood winch mounted behind the cab so it was likely used as a tow truck. It says Stewart Valley, Sask on both doors.
The blue box sitting upside down on the carrier is your typical Cab 13 box. There's a square hole cut out of the floor where they had a winch. It was a tow truck at Melfort, Sask.
The carrier hull has been really butchered. The tracks aren't worn too bad and the rubber on some of the road wheels is chewed up. The tranny and rear end are there along with two good gas tanks. I'm trading one of the Cab 13s for another bunch of carrier parts including a better hull but no armour. It has good road wheels, radiator, oil coolers, dash, seats, etc so I might be able to get it running.

Did the DND change the domestic Census Numbers from "Z" etc to "L" for "Lorry" by 1942 or is that a misread of Z 42-1- etc.?

David, I guess they made the change by 1942 as it's quite clearly an L.

Default Z - L

Well, if "Z" meant "truck" up to 1-ton/1-tonne, I can imagine that the DND numbers would differentiate at some stage during the war to show "L" for "lorry". Just not seen this before...what does anyone else have to say please?

I took the fire truck body off the cab 11 this morning and am trying to figure out what kind of body the floor was for. It was likely original equipment. The wheel wells have been covered over but the welded on angles facing up might be original. That ridge about 10" in from the sides and across the front and back is post army.
That number complete with stars is stamped in the side of the frame rail on the passengers side. What would the number indicate?
How scarce are these 15 cwt Ford Cab 11s? I guess all Cab 11s are scarce but this one doesn't seem to generate near as much interest as the C15.
It just dawned on me that the number 1G 10495 F is a Ford engine serial number, but what month?
I also forgot to mention that it has Chev rear ends front and back.

Default engine number

I looked on the Canadian Register site and 1940 Ford engine numbers went to 11500 by October 1. Mine is 1000 lower so that should put it in late August 1940. When did Ford start putting vents in their 11 cabs?
