Default Change-over

My information has it that the wooden steering wheel replaced the hard black rubber wheel in 1943 for Chevrolets at chassis number 2844515585.

As regards changing from rubber, all I can imagine is that the loss of Malay and Burmese rubber plantations led to a shortgae of natural rubber, and any available was required for tyres and perhaps windscreen wipers, etc. Trials were of course carried out with cherry wood tyres, in order to try and save rubber. Changing the steering wheel to wood was a logical decision.

No doubt I am totally wrong!
