His listing doesn't make it very easy to understand. If they were arranged numerically the colour structure would be more obvious.
There are some errors & omissions. He seems to suggest the code was fixed in 1931 but there have been regular additions, deletions & renumberings. 1931 57 colours, 2-digit code, "BS 381 Colours for ready mixed paints" 1948 93 colours, 3-digit code introduced, "BS 381C Colours for ready mixed paints" 1949 97 colours 1964 25 colours added, 24 deleted or renumbered "BS 381C Colours for specific purposes" 1966 7 colours added 1970 2 colours added 1980 5 colours added, 41 paints listed as obsolecent 1988 7 colours added, 7 deleted, 6 renumbered, 4 colours renamed The chart as stated for 1931 has these ommissions 7 Dark Blue 34 Slate 45 Venetian Red 47 Light Indian Red 48 Deep Indian Red 51 Chocolate 60 Deep Buff There are two 56, Lemon should be 55 25 should not be Dark, but Light Brunswick Green
