In response to the question about the hole on the side of the carrier I think it was part of the early flamethrower conversions.
I think this was the Ronson. You can see the hole and some sort of coupling for the fuel hose that ran outside the hull. Perhaps it allowed the operator to turn a valve while remaining inside the vehicle.
