Default Roller arms

Mine are pretty much frozen in place, and one is broken off and missing. The rollers are flat-spotted from not having done much actual rolling. Haven't decided yet what to do about it.

Not planning to recycle it yet, just wish I could get more time out at the dacha and in the shop. Not been there for two weeks, and when I do get there, I have gates to install on the road approaches.

I got a bumper from Lorne Ertle for nada, or for at least doing up a CD of Clark tractors for him - wasn't such a freebie, as it still cost me $$$ to have the machine shop press most of the kinks out of it, but I figure I would have spent the same to make one up. Also had a an auto glass shop make up some new window panes for me, but that's it for recent progress.

Trying to find the right kind of 'U" moulding for the panes, otherwise will use setting tape.

Mark,

I'll send you the product number for U channel later - I got mine from a fellow Rotter here in Ottawa (I won't include a shameless plug for Speedy Auto Glass).

Cheers,

Alex,

I hope to coord this visit with the return of our one and only Gunner. I need Colin's arrival details, and will try to lure Gunner out of his African reverie to get his RTU date.

Maybe the Wild One will find a way out of Gagetown and join us...

Ultimately, we MUST have a proper Gracies Call before the old ladies drag us off to the mall for Christmas shopping (can't guess what I'll get from my bride - I got new "boots" this month...).

More to follow.

Default Gracies Call

Just don't make in the middle of the week, lads! A Friday night is doable in a pinch, Saturday easy. Recommend 8, 15 or 22 Dec, almost guaranteed...

Default Activities of Nov 24

It seems that something like winter has arrived. Snow clearing was in order to start the day. Rob put the snow tires onto his daily driver. We attached the snow blower to the tractor, melted the ice block out of the impeller and demonstrated that the blower still blew. The scrap merchant did a "no show" so we are thinking of waiting to spring and doing scrap removal as a "self help" project.
The ritual of Breakfast/Lunch at Chez Marie was duly observed. A new waitress was in attendance. We aren't quite sure how she reacted to three unknown clowns walking in and asking for "the usual". It probably didn't help that when she asked for details on what the usual was she heard phrases like "snotty eggs".
HUP wheels and other 16 inch wheels were measured for comparison, and yes, HUPs are "different" in this area too compared to real trucks. Rob took photos and may post once other duties are done. Rob continued his procect to clean up HUP wheels to mount his new tires. Bob and I went out into the field and brought a frame back to recover parts. it's so much less work to bring the project to the tools than the other way around. Also, less work finding things you drop if the snow has been cleared or packed down. Axles were removed from the frame, wheels from axles and the rear axle brought in for disassembly and recovery of fiddly little bits. An amazing amount of heat assistance was needed to break 60+ years of rust bond.

Default Chilly Saturday at the Barn

Well, it was cold and sunny earlier that day, but had clouded over and warmed up considerably by the time Bob and Grant arrived.

As mentioned by Grant, fixing up the snowblower was the priority (just for clarity sake, Bob is actually not pinned under the tractor in this shot - he is attaching the snow blower).

Default RIM SHOTS

We decided we needed a better understanding of how to use them thar mesurin stiks to determine rim differences between the hybrid product improved HUP and the clunky older heavyweights. So, to add to the diagrams and measurements already posted, here is the Hammond contribution:

6 Bolt HUP rim:

8 bolt rim:

The HUP rim actually fits perfectly into the inside of the 8 bolt rim:

HUP rim "inside":

HUP rim "outside":

8 bolt rim inside:

8 bolt rim outside:

Yes, Virginia, there is a difference. But is it enough to stir panic into the souls of those who bought US tires for their 8 bolt beasts? Stay tuned...

Default Roasting CMP Nuts Over an Open Fire

Bob and Grant decided to dismatle ole Red to salvage some axle and brake parts. Suprisingly enough, the nuts refused to part company without the help of the torch...

Bob at this happiest: in the CMP office:

A good body man can fix her up in no time, thinks Grant.

Default Roastin' chestnuts by the fire.....

Take whole different meaning when heating up the lug nuts off a CMP.......

There was not one nut that came off with out being glowed cherry red..... and this with the impact wrench which put out about 450 pounds of torque. We have a bigger 3/4 gun but you risk breaking the bolt stud.

We are collecting all the good rims for the new tires. All will be blasted, inspected for damage or rust pits and painted. Suspending the half sections on a nylon rope and wacking with a hammer should give you a clear "ring" anything else might be cracked.......

Taking the rims apart will require more heat but this time will be using the 3/4 drive. Threads will be cleaned/chased and greased before reassembly.

The worst rims....some have a stud broken....will be used with worn Michelin block thread tires for yard use.

It never ends.....

Forecast now is +4C (40F) and rain... from green grass to total white to mud...... all in one week.

BooB

Canadian Rust must be of better grade than what we see below the boarder. I've never had that much problem loosening the rim nuts. Wonder what is different, here is what I’m doing in the general order:
1. Soak the nuts with penetrating oil overnight or over several weeks
2. Try them with ½ drive impact wrench rated at 300 ftlbs luck for me this has generally removed most of the nuts.
3. Reapply the penetrating oil or liquid wrench
4. Vibrate any remaining nuts with flat punch in air-powered chisel trying to hit all the sides of the nuts that can be reached also vibrate around nuts on the rim
5. Try the ½ impact again this time changing the direction every few seconds
6. Give up and call it a day
7. Having recovered a day or two start all over again
8. Add heating the nuts with propane torch (I don’t have oxy/acetylene)

I keep repeating this over a couple of days and so far every nut has eventually yielded. Maybe the difference is just the heating and cooling cycle over a number days. Using this process I’ve been lucky in that none of the nuts or studs have broken off.

Default Your so patient.....

...but then you are retired with time on your hands.....

Us working Rotters have to do it fast so we use mega heat..... impact .....repeat heat cool impact..... have not broken one yet...only the gorilla with a 3/4 drive at the tire shop actually broke one...

Heat judicially applied saves a lot of broken anything.....

Default Forgot to mention.....

.....what complicated things is when we removed the front rims off the brake drum.... it took us a little while to realize the previous owner had installed two right hand drums..... so when we were doing the driver's side it got a little tricky.... until we realize we were turning the wrong way....hihihi.... live and learn!!!

Never take for granted that regular threads are on the right side of the truck...

Hi Bob

I’ve come across civilian pickup trucks which used reversed thread nuts and studs where you would find one or two nuts being the wrong direction thread because somebody had broken one off trying to remove it then replaced them with what ever they had.

Almost as funny as my sister who tried to change a tire on her car one dark rainy night only to have all the lug nuts break off. Then she called me to come help I arrived pried hub cap with its fake now missing lug nuts and changed the tire, what amazed me was that she had a lug wrench that fit the fake plastic lug nuts, my father it seams had replace the cheep lug wrench with a good X style wrench when he had taught her to change tires.

Default Cold One!

Maybe the suds at Gracie's thinned our blood, but we all found it very cold at the barn on Sunday. It was only -17oC, but felt colder. The barn benefitted from Lucifer's warming breath and we set to work on things CMP.

Bob and Grant reassembled Grant's tranny - not without some challenges.

I played with my sliding roof and its rollers. The roller arms were rust welded into place. The whole roof started to deflect when we tried to move the roller arm.

After a good soak with penetrating fluid, Bob put the flame to each roller. Here is what the lil darlin's look like:

Two of the four roller pins have broken off bolts inside, including one with a broken off easy out - Yeah, I know, we've been down that path before...I'll chalk it up to too many fumes.

So, if you see a few of these laying about your shop, PM me and take me to the cleaners!

Default F-f-f-freezing Day at the Barn

It was a little fresh this morning with -21oC showing on the thermometer. Good thing there was no wind. After sparking up Lucifer, the barn warmed up enough for some gloves off work. Bob arrived a little later than usual and spent most of the morning removing the blanket of snow from the driveways and access roads. Grant arrived later still - after completing his various snow removal tasks in the city.

Grant and Bob decided to repair the sandblasting cabinet and fixed the lethargic siphon. Grant then took advantage of the repair work and cleaned up his water pump housing.

Bob continued some work on brake parts - including washing some parts in really cold cleaning fluid. Next came the "hot wrench":

I spend the morning refrubishing rims and in the afternoon, spent a few hours disassembling two of my old tires and rims. One of Kelsey's best:

After that, I spent some time with the needle gun removing 60 years of crap from the rims. Bob thinks I should be called "Bubbles"...

I then reassembled the spare tire that will fit on the HUP's spare bay.

To end the day, I needed Bob's help to pull my car out of the snow bank near the barn. It drove into the snowbank alright, but didn't want to leave...Thanks for the recovery job, Bob.

I guess we are like Panasonic in the old days: "Just slightly ahead of our time."

Four possiblities:

Dropped camera messed up the gubbins;
So cold that that camera wished it was a day later;
My four year old got his jam covered mitts on it again; or
Luddite photographer.

History points to possibility one with influence from possibility four...thanks for noticing.

Hi Bob

If you can access the menu on your camera the best advice is to turn the burnt-in date off - the time and date are always stored in the metadata of each image along with camera type, shutter speed and aperture. I've had to spend hours sometimes trying to carefully remove those ugly yellow dates from photographs people have sent me!

I think I'll put the camera on charge now so it won't be flat. Will you be bringing back recce reports? Or only a photo of all the empties stacked into a Christmas Keith's tree?

Default Plans for Sunday....

From -21C to heavy snow now we have heavy rain and +8 degrees for tomorrow...... so Barn duites willbe pushing the slushey 5 foot snow banks far enough to make room for the next storm........ once the rain soaked snow banks freezes they willnot move until next April.....

North Pole Alaska was Sunny and -26 F today .... while Christmas Island, Australia was rainy/cloudy and 23 warn bloody degrees....... hardly seems fair!!!!

Plans are to relocate some axles and frame while the weather is mild close to the barn and have them ready for inside later disassembly during the Xmas downtime...... need some small fittings for my E brake cables...

No rest for the wicked.....

BooB
PS....Rob...... hope your drive was safe and uneventful.... keep your eyes and ears alert for stray CMPssssss.....

Yesterday the largest part of the day was spent on snow clearance. We cleared the roofs of the temporary truck shelters, cleared entrances to various sheds, cleared around the barn, cleared around the barn again to remove the snow that had slid off the roof. You get the idea.

Default Once we were done with the snow...

After snow clearing, we retired to the inside of the barn and were glad we weren't outside in the worst of the downpour. The transmission of my C15 was put together, closed up and lubricated. It all went well, nothing too hard if you have the manuals available and can source the parts needed. 3 of the 5 bearings looked like they had been water damaged (the other 2 seem to have been replaced fairly recently), the same for the shift rails so rails and a PTO cover to replace the retrofit PTO that had been on my transmission were sourced from another transmission that had a cracked housing and significant water damage. The shift forks were sandblasted, rails polished and the cover reassembled. The reverse gear, bushings and shaft were fine, so reinstalled after a solvent bath, New bearings were installed for the countershaft and between the input and output of the mainshaft. The cleaned parts were replaced in the case, then everything was drizzled with gear oil and spun to spread the oil around, followed by installation of the refurbished top cover and shift lever assembly. It is odd that some parts can look as good as the day they left the factory and others be severely pitted. Water damage isn't always at what you would expect to be the low points of the transmission, puzzling.

Default Transmission bearings

Modern replacements purchased at General Bearing Supply in Ottawa.
All are Fereral Mogul brand.
J-281248 replaces the "Bearing, Transmission Mainshaft Pilot (Hyatt #93424)"
M-1206-EAHL replaces the "Bearing, Countershaft Front Roller (Hyatt #C-1206)"
M-1207-EAHL replaces the "Bearing, Countershaft Rear Roller (Hyatt #C-1207)".
The final test, of course, is whether it works well when driving, but all bearings measure correctly and felt like a reasonable fit during assembly.
