IHC Halftrack Ambulances

Looking for information on the interior layout/equipment fitted to an International Harvester Company (IHC) halftrack ambulance used by Canadian/British forces circa 1944/45. Have several photos showing the exterior red crosses and tarps fitted by no views of the interiors. Am restoring an M5/M9 combination vehicle and would like to complete it as an ambulance variant if I can find the information that I need. ANY help/info/sources/contacts much appreciated. Mark, any internal layout info on an IHC being used as a gun tractor for a 17 pdr. AT gun ? Or internal layout of command/radio halftrack ? The only thing on this varient that I have seen is the cover of the Verlinden detailing kit for M3 halftracks. Robert in Toronto

Not a half-track, but possibly of interest is this picture of a British M3A1 Scout Car which has been converted into an ambulance.

Just came across this picture of a US Army White Half-Track ambulance. I wonder if there would be any similarity between this conversion and the Commonwealth one? Probably a long shot, but maybe a search for US half-track ambulance interiors will yield useable material?

Scanned them last week, but this site wouldn't let me reply, then I forgot what my log in was, then I went to the AMPS in Aberdeen and lost my mind......and my money

I can get you photo's of a comand half track that was used by a Canadian unit in WWII. It is not in the best of shape and has what I believe are unit modifications but if you are interested I can snap some photo's and send them to you.

Rob, i have spoken to my fathers friend, He was a halftrack ambulance driver with the SAR, B Sqn. He is quite ill currently and said he would speak to me in a month or so when he was feeling better Eric told me he was a driver of a white halftrack ambulance, and he remembers the layout quite well. He also told me how simple it was and agreed to make a sketch of as much as he could remember, and that he would look through his photos for any pictures which might help you. I will e-mail you as soon as I have anything back from him.

Wayne is that Halftrack command vehicle the same one I am researching for restoration, the vehicle formerly owned by the South Alberta's, if it is I should have a complete Photo layout by the end of January, both inside and out.

I too am intrigued by the interior fitments; I have somewhere read that the fuel tanks were modified to be in line with each other, one side only.

If anyone finds any interior / outside pics or info I would appreciate it if they could post them on this site or send me an e-mail so I can model a Brit / Commonwealth version.

There are about 5 or 6 photos in a file with descriptions of an M14 HT from 8 Recce, showing three strecthers mounted side by side across the fighting compartment. They were simple tubular racks and were mounted across the vehicle just above the top of the fuel tanks about where the side and rear hinges are located on the side plates.
I have really dark photocopies of it. If you're totally desparate, I can scan them but they may not show up very well. I'll play with them and see what I can do.

Now that Don has steered us in the right direction I can order the relevant volume at Nat'l Archives. I can get scans but they run $15.95 each (300DPI) - same for 5x7 prints.

Hi all
I wonder if the various stretcher mods were very similar across the board ?
i.e. rear loading Jeeps often had rails fitted,
Bren carriers were similar, with extended rear body and a locker behind the engine,
DUKWs had I believe 6 approx
and then of course there were the Buffalo (Fantails) in Italy which were modified, but nothing detailed.

Logically there must be some similarities. I hope this forum is OK for this ?

The roof bows on top are flat bar stock.


Notice that the bars for the stretchers don't extend all the way across so a third can be carried up the center to rest on the stands.

My surprise is also that the rear HT corners are square (as per the Command HT pictures) - as I didn't realise the Canadians had the 'US' style HTs as well as the M5 or M9 series. Was this common ?

Pic looks like a de-gunned M14 AA version, by the cut-out in the rear door. The Poles however used them in the AA configuration too without change.

Got it.
Notice the rear door on the M14 (an LAD mod, fairly common on CW M14's to make them...useful) swings open to the left.
Interesting WD painting job too, with white letters on a black painted field.

Check out the rearmost corners, where the lower armour suite extends back past the folding side.

Most of the M14's in CW service had the guns taken out. They were pretty numerous (due to the generousity of the Yanks...who didn't want to use the homogenous armoured versions) and were next to useless in the AA role.
Lots of units used them, but the M5/M9 series were preferred as they had continuous armour from bottom to top and a rear door.

I may have got the versions mixed up !
The M15 / M16s were used by the Poles.
So it looks like the Canadians had them too, guns removed, as shown !
Plus M14s as you say.

For some reason I had imagined a much more complicated rack system for the stretchers, upper and lower levels etc. I guess the kiss pricipal was used then too ! Now I have no excuse (except lack of funds) to daudle on my restoration.
