Hi David:

Three "educated guesses".

1. KHD/Magirus, possibly ex BAO.
2. GMC CCKW either 352 or 353
3. Could be a Mack

Looks like an old farm plow for the fields ... used to loosen the soil before us kids planted the gazillions of potatoes!!! That one could sure turn up a lot more soil faster than the usual plows

David,

First photo is I am pretty sure, a Magirus with Rolba snow removal equipment, with a Kent Clearvue windscreen (the circular thing in centre of screen, it rotated to keep vision clear).

The second photo is a Mack snow plough and I am sure the third photo of the breakdown is also a Mack

It is an OWST 5 ton short wheelbase tipper and they were supplied by Bedford to a Ministry of War Transport licence during the War, for essential use, so my guess is it was not military.

May I humbly suggest that the middle photo shows a vehicle with a cab that looks quite narrow for a Mack and as well the wheel /tyre equipment looks a bit light for that particular class of vehicle.

I stand by my suggestion, for two reasons, the cab and the front mudguard and will narrow it down to a NM6. A lot of these were used by the Ministry and County Councils for snow clearance in the UK, and some still survive. I doubt that a GMC would have enough power to push a blade of that size

Always an enthusiast, never an expert am I, but.

I cannot get there from here with a Mack NM6.

Herewith a poor photo snagged off of Google as my scanner is being nasty again.

Edit: Sorry, it may also be that the plows are parked in front of the offending truck and not even attached to it.

Bill i have to agree with Richard on this one that the truck is a NM 5or 6, i think that the low size of the body for carrying salt and grit is throwing you. We had a number in the 50s here in Kent used by the council but ours kept the original bodies i believe the one in the shot is Scottish based as they are the only ones i have seen with the chequer on the blade, the next vehicle down would have been the GMC but as richard states the original engine would not have the power for thats size blade plus the cab conversion is typical of a civilianised Mack, a restored example was on the rally circuit a few years back with this type of cab but i believe it has now been fully restred to original form. One roll the GMC did see much post war use in the UK was a lime spreader as attached, this one was in use in the early 50s by Kent based Carbolim

Perhaps I get a point for the windscreen which is rather closer to the GMC style.

In the meantime, I have as from 01 January become semi retired with my Son and Daughter in Law taking over most of the day to day operations of our shop. As such, I now work 3 days a week at the shop and perhaps 1 day a week on the PC at home instead of 7 days a week at the shop.

I have now started the labour intensive project of starting to scan in the boxes of stuff I have collected over the last 50 years.
I am trying to devote at least a couple of hours a day, but it is tedious.

Preview scan, then scan, then move to Photoshop and edit and so on and so on.

Anyway, here are a few I did today.

With a Lorain Moto-Crane on the left. I wonder if this was an ex-RAF crane. The company I did my appenticeship with, used to overhaul Lorain cranes for the Air Ministry.........before my time there though.

Woofendens ran a sizable fleet of Thew cranes many were bought from US military sales at Burtonwood, they even went to the states to purchse some as well. The company were prolific in buying and selling ex military vehicles and even serviced and returned vehicles to the states for the US Military. I have a number of photos of the cranes and other ex army and airforce equipment, attached is a image of a Thew in US army i hope

Yahoo it worked, makes a change for me as it always goes tits up, one thing i note the image is a thumbnail and when you click to enlarge its not much bigger. Is this to conserve space or do i ineed to click on a different source in the chart provided

Hi Les:

I think when you click on the thumbnail it comes up the same size as the source you sent it from if that makes sense.

In other words if your photo was 300x200 instead of 600x300, that it what is going to come up when you hit the thumbnail. I haven't figured how to make them any larger yet.
On the same subject, I think Jif is trying to get thumbnails to appear instead of the text line for all photos prior to today.

No idea about he blower truck, but the second image is a Mack NM6 (ish) which has had a hard cab and dump body added, and the third image is an NO2 with breakdown equipment.
