Default PIAT troubles

Check out this news link to a story in Florida. It seems the local Sheriff's office busted an organized crime ring and one of the weapons seized was a PIAT with ammunition.

You are falling for the usual tripe that police departments use when they come across collectors items like PIATs. No where in the article do they say they had rounds for the PIAT, and in the interview they even make it clear that there were no live PIAT bombs found. They do, of course, use the usual sensationalist phrases to describe this along with some of the other weapons found (large caliber gun=elephant gun, one gun had 2 bandanas, whatever those might be). They also describe how dangerous a weapon like the PIAT is, even without the bombs.

Of course, they must be talking about the inevitable hernia you will get trying to cock the damn thing, or how sore your hand would be if you placed it in the tray area. But even the BATF in the US, which is not known for it's easygoing views on destructive devices, has removed the PIAT from the list of DDs.

I have no doubt that the persons who have been arrested in this batch likely have some good reasons to be arrested, like drugs. But, as always, the police department has to use this approach.
