Canadian Military History, Volume 16 No. 4 has an article by Andrew Iarocci called Close Fire Support: Sexton Self-Propelled Guns of the 23rd Field Regiment. The author thanks veterans William Turner, Clifford Baker, Larry McNabb, Larry Hollerman (sic) Herb Danter and John Wilkes for their contribution. All are veterans of the 23rd Field Regiment. Some great pictures of the Sexton. I find it interesting that the radial engine used 100 octane!
Other articles of note in this volume are The Guns of Bretteville. 13th Field Regiment, RCA and the defence of Bretteville-l'Orgueilleuse, 7-10 June 1944. First Deployment of the 14th Field Regiment, RCA D-Day Bernieres-sur-Mer 6 June 1944. |

Herb Danter (of this forum) has an incredible memory and is a gifted writer. We need him to put more of his adventures and misadventures to print. Well maybe not everything.

Yes Barry, I had the very good fortune to meet with Herb and other veterans including Larry Holleran and John Wilkes during the 83rd Battery (of the 23rd Field Regiment)reunion. I especially enjoyed dinner that evening with Spike Maskell who took the time to fill me in on my Uncle's exploits with the regiment. The following day we went to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton. Needless to say that the veterans have very fine stories to tell!

Hi,
Do any of the photos of 23rd Field display names or WD serial numbers at all? Cheers Kevin |

Kevin: The short answer is no. There is a mix of photos of the 19th Field Rgt performing maintenance of their guns etc. One of the vehicles has a "13" just above a star on the front armour plate. None of the other pictures have any serial numbers that I can identifiy.
