Bren Gun Mounts
Hi Darron - hopefully the attached images will help. Perhaps you should consider buying my photocopies of Carrier manuals. Details are in For Sale Or Trade.

What a.....
useful device. Why the hell didn't the Canadian Design Board think of something like this instead of that stupid rubber strap to hold the Gun down.
????????? OK Bruce (Parker of course)...tackle this question. Peter S |

No photo Harold,
The Bren is held by the front mount pin under the gas cylinder, and by friction at the rear of the mount, where a spring steel piece grips the receiver.
The mount hangs inside the front plate, to the right of the firing slot when not in use, or if a Vickers is fitted. Rob Brent I think the Canadian mount is similar to the small cast mount that you see inside the front plate of a mid production LP2A as shown in Jeff Plowman's first NZ Armour book. There was a 'U' shaped piece of steel bolted inside the firing slot to narrow the opening for the Bren. Rob |

Kevin, are you saying you have seen this T16 (m606 paz's photos) mount used in early British carriers?

here are pictures.
These are the mounts used in the front of the early carriers (real Bren Carrrier) The Bronze lower mount being the primary mount in the gunners front armour of the earlier Bren Carrier. The number varied from model to model with most variants having 3 or 4 of them. With the advent of the U.C carrier, the rubber rest with rubber strap had superceeded this mount, in the front. The bronze mount (last picture) was employed at all other gun mount points. The upper part was to all intents, obsolete, with the arrival of the U.C., but did see some limited use at times (at the alternative mounts) where the aerial mount (pogo stick was the std issue item The other one shown is the Australian arrangement that allowed the mounting of a Bren gun into the std Vickers mount fitted in the Australian LP2/ 2a Carriers. From the bolt and clamping nut the top is exactly the same.

Does anyone have good photos/drawings for the two bolt on gunners grips brackets/mounts for a CDN MK I * carrier.
I have the rubber grips, need to fabricate the 2 mounts.

Because our DND at the time (and probably today too) were cheap b@stards. Not to say they didn't charge full price though.

Nice picture Mariano, There must have been a shortage of front guards, or some sort of trial going on. Any info with the picture?

How about this mount? To me it appears to be the "goose neck" from an anti aircraft mount that has been attached to the lower machined part that fits the brass mount. The carrier would be a British built one.
RHLI carrier from 1941. The carrier is the one that famously took the King for his first ride in a UC. The name plate on the front says "Gail" That was Denny Whitakers daughter back in Canada. He was the OC of the RHLI Carrier Platoon. The last picture is the entire platoon lined up for a photo.

Now you're complicating life Jordan. Never seen that one before.
It looks to be the standard bronze mount on the outside, so to use this mount would require four holes in the gunners front plate of a U.C. Are these British carriers? (Brit headlights and horn) What's the bit with the name on it above the drivers vision slot?

We talked about some of these mounts on my restoration thread linked below. Scroll down to the Carrier Candy section on page five and message 150 has measurements of the Bren mount which fits into the cast sockets used with the pogo sticks.
http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/sh...?t=9136&page=5 I've seen the curved goose neck type mount in Jordan's photo somewhere else. Will see if I can dig it pics. Seems like it was on very early modified jeeps that the British airborne first had when they were still in the "show off" public relations mode prior to anything being done operational. Circa early 1942.
