Default Is this a common book?

Hi guys. I have had this book in storage until today. I havent seen another, and wondered how many are about.
It is a photographic representation of what the Ford Motor Company of Canada could supply.

Lynn, are there any more pics of the rear of the 8cwt? If so, could you post them? There's a few details that I'm not sure of yet. Thanks.

Default Portee

Note the F-60L 6-pounder Portee! I only knew of the Chevrolet version, which the British ordered, and then quickly had rebuilt to G/S specs.

Default Ford and Chev

Lynn - that's a national treasure. Back when I was collecting and preserving CMPs years ago I had the address of a lady who owned a copy of the Ford and Chev books which I was told she had for sale. I chased them for many years and eventually gave up. Yours is one of those books. I believe thay were only a relatively short print run.

Cheers

Phill

Looks like you have some takers for a copy of your book (not myself, unless it had Weasels in there ); my 5 cents worth would be to get it copied professionally rather than a 'I ran them off at lunchtime on the office photocopier' type of effort. I am sure the increased cost for a high quality print of a rare journal would be of little concern to an interested enthusiast.

Steve.

Although there seems to be a groundswell of interest in a copy of this book, is there any point?

Lynn, is there any text accompanying the photos? If the book is just pictures, then Clive Law has already reproduced the same original factory pictures on CD, and they are as clear as the day they were taken and scanned at a high resolution so all the detail is crystal clear, not like some copy or scan of an airbrushed lithograph. You can order the CD through Clive's site, http://www.servicepub.com/

Default Copy v CD

Hi all - I know what Tim Tam is saying but I still like to have a hard copy in my hands as opposed to another CD. Call me old fashioned but you lose a lot with the electronic media. I would still buy a professionally manufactured copy.

Default CD versus real copy.....

Being old fashion, I still like to have a "hard paper" copy of manuals.... especially the MB - C2 which I have as a repro and an original. The original stays in the house.... the repro copy resides in the barn and is well worn and greased up in areas we have worked on like the T case.

The CD does have it's merits....... becaue Clive had access to original hi - res archivale pictures from FORD of Canada,(which includes some Chev.) on his CD you can actually enlarge the pictures on your computer, enhance the contrast, etc. which allows you to see details that would otherwise be missed and print a specific photo for the barn. That level of resolution his rarely found on the cheap CD sold on EBay for example.

Now if an equivalent set of unseen information/photos are available for Chev. from GM I would be in for a book or CD.

Wow!! Five orders from Australia in the course of 2 days! I can soon retire.
Thnx to all for your continued support of my efforts. I agree with all of you that a hard copy that you can hold in your hands and read in bed is best - as this is not possible due to the limited number of surviving copies the the CD is the next best thing - and certainly more affordable.

Although Bob and others have commented on the resolution of the images in the CD they are still low-res. I will repeat the offer I made previously; if you want a number (please, not all) of images in hi-res in order to zoom in on a particualr screw, just let me know and I will send them to you in a separate CD. Ask Rob about the HUP CD I burned for him.

Cheers,
Clive

Thanks to Brian Gough the CD includes hundreds of GM photos as well. These were made available to me in the same format as the Ford photos, i.e., hi quality, 8 x 10" prints on photgraphic paper. These also included GM captions which guarantees that the ID is correct.

Tony,
Thanks for bringing this to the attention of the MLUers. For Australian buyers who may gasp at the $15.00 shipping charge added by my software I confirmed this morning that the actual cost (before packaging supplies) is $13.80. In one case where a number of books were added to the order and the shipping charges totalled $33.00 be assured that I refunded $18.00 as overpayment. This is because my software isn't 'smart' enough to figure out all of the permutations of book size/weight and destination.
Clive

Clive I send a lot of plants by post around Australia and I glanced at the $15.00 fee and thought it was fair and reasonable if not cheap. I look forward to getting the CD and having a browse, especially at the MCP vehicles.

Clive,
I have Lynn’s book at present. It differs from an ordinary bound type book in that it is a heavy binder held together by removable, threaded, studs containing individual sheets. The pictures show different models of vehicles with brief descriptions as captions and then views of the same model from different angles.
Lynn has kindly given me permission to make a copy for myself but it will only be on c.d. in .pdf format scanned at 400 dpi.
The photos in the book, while very good, are not glossy high resolution and are on paper that has yellowed a bit over time.
I have tested copies at higher resolutions in jpg and tiff in colour and greyscale but the results when printed on my colour laser printer are still quite grainy looking and have large file sizes.
I expect that a commercially done reprint would be very expensive.
Your CD sounds like it would be much better to have but I have this opportunity to make this one for myself.
Regards,
Terry

Default GM photos

I have hi-res scans of about 200 GM photos that I should like to add to, to see if I can build up the best possible GM album.

I am rather proud that my Pearsons book turned out so well with fantastic scans of original professional shots. Modern tech is so wonderful!

Clive, although the images may not technically qualify for the title of Hi-Res, on my 19" monitor they are clear as a bell and do not want for clarity. Certainly far superior to the book printing methods of the 40's. I have also asked you in the past for a sample of individual pics in Hi-res, and yes they are much better, but the CD versions are fine.

For someone who wanted hard copies of any particular pic, Clive's special Hi-res one's would print nicely on A4 photo paper (which is actually an enlargement of the original 8"x10), and the CD ones would come out nicely on A5.

The availability of any printed repro manual relies on the integrity of the repro'er as to how accurate and complete a copy you get.

It is possible to purchase from a variety of sources a hardbound copy of the "Ford Service Bulletins", the loose-leaf, bound technical references supplied by Ford to their service agents. These cover a variety of subjects and offer information on specs and tolerances, changes to components and helpful suggestions on maintaining Ford Vehicles. Unfortunately, the reprints tend to be the US version, and do not have the details of differences of Canadian produced vehicles. I have bought a 400 page Repro copy of the US Bulletins and there is much info missing that is in my original 750 page copy of the Canadian bulletins. That may be because the original copier of the US book chose not to include info they thought irrelevant, or their copy of the book may not have contained that information originally. The Service Bulletins predate the publication of the "Special Vehicles" and "MB-F1" manuals, so they contain gems of information relevant to the first Ford CMPs, MCPs and other military vehicles that are simply not contained in the repro books. (David, you might be interested in the Date of the info on the Transfer Case? )

Other Repro books that I have contain blatant errors and emissions, and once you make that realisation, you tend to distrust the info they contain as being an accurate representation of the original. Aussie Carrier owners will be aware of the LP2A Parts book with the missing page 13, and there is also a repro of the Boys Anti-Tank rifle book that has re-made the front cover to include a major spelling error! When you know they've gone to some lengths to doctor the cover, you tend to wonder what else has been altered within.
