I've got a few wireless bits that I need info on. There's a crystal calibrator and an alignment test set CTS-3. Are they for use with the 19 set and how are they used?

The calibrator #10 is for the WS62. A manual for it can be found here:
http://www.royalsignals.org.uk/calib...avemeters.html The CTS-3/PRC is used for the CPRC26. I haven't seen any docs for it. |

I bid on a bunch of 19 set stuff from the person selling on Bruce's post but there's somebody who restores old Jeeps that keeps outbidding me. He bids in the last 15 seconds and always gets top bid. I think he just bids like $100 on anything 19 set and pays whatever. I thought I was bidding more than stuff is worth but he obviously doesn't think so. The woman selling the stuff says she has lots more too.
Here's a screen shot of some of the sales. What do you guys think of the prices?

Here's a fairly complete 19 set on ebay. I bid on it but it'll go for more than I want to pay so you guys can have at it. I would have just needed the carrier and one of the remote controls and a few cables anyway.

They actually look not bad. I've seen much of this stuff go for higher prices. It's not like the old days when this equipment was cheap as it was only the hams and experimenters that bought it. We now have to compete with mil vehicle restorers and re-enactors with bottomless pockets.

Here's the rest of the ebay pix. It's even got the maple leaf sticker still attached. It's a nice looking unit all right but when you add $200 or so shipping and the exchange rate it adds up. It wouldn't matter if the sale price was under $400 but I doubt that'll happen. I got mine off ebay last year for $75 but it wasn't listed right so there weren't any other bidders. Of course, mine was just the radio and power supply.

The second photo appears to be a test set to check the modules for the CPRC26 radio set. The large plug plugs into the battery and the socket on the control pannel is where the modules get pluged into and you set the dail to which module ur testing at the time. I have one here some where but no booklet for it.

Here's some more of those ebay prices. The complete 19 set went for $610. Did anyone on MLU get it? Probably not too bad a price when you look at all you get.

I just bought this aerial gear off ebay. I'm pretty sure it's the base for the 20 ft or 34 ft telescoping masts, of which I have a 20 ft. In my manual for the HUW radio installation it says this is used with the no 9 aerial base.
I have the no 9 base that's about a foot tall and was wondering how the two hook together. Is there a pipe that goes in that mast base I just bought then goes into the No 9 base? Also what's the counterpoise? That white wire with my ebay stuff is the aerial wire I assume. What else would have been in that leather case? The pictured NZ 8 cwt looks to have the telescoping mast.

Dave: I've got some reference material in my shack but if you can wait 'til sometime on the weekend, I'll compile answers to most if not all of your questions.
Can I assume that you'll only be interested in HUW installation using F section rod aerials, and not an end fed horizontal long wire. That's important to know, as I plow through the material. One thing which will help you immeasurably is the following pamphlet: Working Instructions Antenna Vertical 34' Steel Mk 1 HQS 9070-12-17 PC 82495C-314 ZA/C00079 3 Mar 44 You can Google this or one of the 19 set sites can help, including the Royal Signals 19 set site. Talk to you on the weekend, if Bruce Parker hasn't jumped in already.

Hi Dave,
The #9 base is for the short VHF whip for the B set. The insulator you have mounts either on the ground spike when used as a ground station or on a mounting plate on the roof of the hardtop vehicle (HUW, M152,etc). When used on a truck the aerial cable is fed to the base by aerial mount C2. The white wire you have are talc coated ground radial leads. This has to do with optimizing the performance of the aerial system. It provides a counterpoise to the vertical radiating element. The bag contained a ground spike, ground pegs, insulating guy assemblies, a couple of hammers and any spare aerial bits that were collected. Edited... I found the manual and the photos show what and how. Last edited by Bruce MacMillan; 19-12-09 at 23:11. Reason: ad photos |

I finally got the manual off the royal signals site. That site isn't just user unfriendly, it's on the verge of user hostile. After two days and about a dozen requests I finally got the link and password.
The manual answered a lot of my questions. I'm also trying to get the manual for the wireless remote control No 1 but am getting another run around. Has anyone got any info on how this unit hooks to the 19 set?

Operating Instructions
Wireless Remote Control Unit No 1 (Canadian) RCA-113894, 5 Jan 43, or, DEIL-36XR298, 13 Nov 44, ZA/CAN1304. Basically any snatch plug from the Control Unit of the 19 set to the snatch plug of the RCU. For operation you need 2 RCUs...the nearby unit (with the 19 set), and the remote unit connected by field cable. You also need a 3V power source into the battery box. Don't fully jack in the key and plug assy until you are ready to send, otherwise dynamotor on 19 set will activate. For the finer points, ya gotta have the manual.

I have a few questions on these pieces too.
-about what year would that hand mike be and is it any better or worse than the regular ones? -what's the green control unit No 17 used for? -what does the control unit No 3 need for wires to hook it to the radio?

The hand mic is a Tannoy power mic. It's probably 1943/44. It has a carbon element and is designed to hook to the intercom system. I wouldn't use it with the radio.
Control unit 17 is used in AFVs to connect wireless sets 31/38/88 to the 19 set system. Junction distribution box #3 was made originally for the driver/co-driver to buzz the commander regardless of which radio he is using. It attaches to the intercom system, not the radio, by 5 wires. It was later mounted on the outside of an AFV with a telephone enabling infantry to talk to the commander. |

In the diagram you've provided for the setup that is a control unit #3B mk II, located below the variometer. This was pretty much standard for the truck/ground station. It has a large socket for the cable to connect to the WS19 proper. It also has at least 2 drop leads for the headsets.
The grey box in your photo (the one with button marked Call Commander) is not a control unit. It is a junction distribution box #3 and it's function was stated earlier. Other control units can be used, not just the 3B. |

Bruce, would a Control Unit No 1 Mk 2 work there? I have one of those.
It looks like I have some extra stuff to trade if anyone's interested. -Tannoy power mic -Junction box No 3 -Control Unit No 17 I need some aerial stuff and another Wireless Remote Control Unit No 1 (Canadian)

Yes, you can connect the #1 mk II control unit directly to the 19 set. You MUST however remove the fuse that is inside the unit. This is part of the "unattended" switching system when this box is used with the #2 control unit (standard setup btw). Failure to do so puts a direct short on the LT line when using the #1 series alone.
Also be aware that one drop lead is for the gunner and only gives intercom use. The other lead is for the commander and gives intercom & radio use. Your spare parts would be useful for someone restoring armour. |

This 19 set was on our local craigslist a couple of weeks ago. The asking price was $580. I don't know if the ebay ad is the same seller or a flipper. It is a fairly complete bit of kit.

Im sure you guys will kick me for this one. That lady selling all the radio stuff on ebay. She had listed one of the rather rare WS19 waterproof covers for the Mk1 Carriers. This was the one that attached to the hull sides and then covered the entier radio and mount and all its bits.
This is when it pays to know your stuff as she had it listed by the seldom used part #. The price wasn't bad either. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWAX:IT
