Chevrolet 1.5 ton chassis
Hi guys
I'm looking for information about Chevrolet trucks. As we all know, the LRDG standardised on the Chevrolet 1533 chassis for their desert patrol vehicles. As far as I know, Chevrolet updated the basic truck year by year from the 1939 VA, the 1940 WA, the 1941 YR and finally the 1942 MR series. What I'd like to find out is how widely used was the BASIC TRUCK used (not the LRDG vehicles) either by the Canadians or the Brits as reference is very hard to find, and in what versions. Any photo reference/links would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Mike Shackleton Last edited by mshackleton; 04-04-10 at 16:45. |

I have domestic- and possibly some overseas-theatre census numbers and contracts for all British Chevrolet trucks. Some of the listed ones (1939 Models) were in fact delivered to Alexandria and then some of those were used by the LRDG along with Egyptian Army trucks, sorry lorries.
The US military trucks are listed on my website: http://clubs.hemmings.com/clubsites/...tarychevs.html In addition to British took over a number of YR lorries with Thornton-Houlder 6x4 drive, sourcedf from Flint, MI plant. The Canadian CC60L was produced in three versions according to the parts list, and was model 1533, with the 'X' and numeral code depicting the export market, so 1533X1 was destined for the UK and I think from memory 1533X2 was for India. I have all the codes if required! It would appear that they were in theory obsolete early on but disposals only started in 1945, continuing to 1948 so they must have had a use! Perhaps in cargo and personnel transport? I included a couple of shots of 1941 Model rhd CC60LX1 lorries (three visible) assembled at General Motors Ltd's Bamber Bridge facility near Preston, Lancashire in a recent issue of VINTAGE ROADSCENE magazine. They were brand-new and just off the line, as was a YR Thornton-Houlder lorry. Please let me know if I can help further. |

Chevy
The left one looks like a 1939 VA, as the 1940 WA had a wider top grille part and less rad bars.
