Default Chevrolet Heavy Utility contracts

Hi

I have recently spoken with a gentleman that has bought an unrestored HUP. It occured to me that I could really tell him little about actual production numbers and relation to type etc. I was wondering if any other information exsited as regards contracts, number produced etc, beyond what was originally published in Wheels and Tracks.

Is any one aware of any other source of information / data?

kind regards

Nick

Default C8A Contracts

Hi Nick,

A very good question - let’s hope some more information surfaces as a result. I am always grateful for Bart Vanderveen’s extensive articles on the C8A and C8AX in Wheels & Tracks #1 and #2.

As far as contract numbers go, the C8A-04 Spare Parts List of June, 1945 gives 41 orders that vehicles were supplied on: 25 Supply/Mech Orders and 16 Miscellaneous Orders, (13 for Canada and 1 each to New Zealand, China and France).

If anyone wants the specific order numbers from that Parts List, let me know and I will send them or post them here.

Brian.

Default S/M?

'S/M', 'S.M.' represents an abbreviation of 'DEMAND [not Contract as I thought] SUPPLY/MECHANICAL'. This relates to British Ministry of Supply contracts. I take it that C.D.L.V. is 'CONTRACT DEMAND LIGHT VEHICLE'? I can't imagine that it is 'CANADIAN DEMAND LIGHT VEHICLE'.

Default heavy utilities

Hi david and Brian
Thanks for that.... My question really centred around which of the model types 1c1, 1c2 etc were allocated to each contarct and what sort of numbers were produced... and I suppose what still survives?

Has a representative sample survived or just particular groupings because of some quirk of georgraphy

For instance my HUP 1c1 was contract LV308, was all of contract 308 for the same vehicles? Likewise Ian McS ambulance that I am very pleased to have recently brought home is LV1512, are all ambulances traced back to this particular contract? I do know that Eric in Belgium has another ambulance from the same contract...

So, I'm wondering were the contracts model specific, is it possible to identify which models were produced i what quantity?

and what about wierd stuff like the ZL, were these 'aftermarket type' conversions or factory jobs?

If the C8AX trucks were supplied under SM2934 then what were te trucks supplied under NZSM/MS36? I had always assumed this to be the AX contract. Inidentally the SM 2934 is not listed in the C8A-04 parts list. So were there seperate publications? Any one got a copy?

Further still, what were the trucks supplied to China and to France (and where did these French trucks go?)

Lots of questions.....I'm on holiday so theres time to think!

Default Last known trucks to CDLVs

4844516479 IC9/PUTR-2 C.D.L.V. 2610 SEPTEMBER 29 1944

Now, to answer the question basically the C8AX chassis-cabs were purchased by the Ministry of Supply and then shipped to NZ under aid from London. The NZ contract you mentioned was for direct purchases from Canada by the NZ government.

Default Contract Info

Hi Nick and David,

Nick asked, “Further still, what were the trucks supplied to China and to France (and where did these French trucks go?)”

I am aware of only one C8A built on an AID contract number. It is an HUW, serial #3844516858, built Jan 10/1944, on the AID to CHINA contract. And where is it located?……well, it is in France, owned by Jacky Herrault.

Nick also asked, “and what about wierd stuff like the ZL, were these 'aftermarket type' conversions or factory jobs?”

I have data plate info. on only 4 MACH-ZL2’s, all built on Contract LV. 2611:

serial # 3844536668 May 11/44, engine #FR3969158
serial # 3844536671 May 11/44, engine #FR3969368
serial # 3844536688 May 12/44, engine #FR3969099
serial # 3844536696 May 15/44, engine # unknown

Perhaps Contract LV. 2611 was exclusively for the MACH-ZL2. I don’t know of any other C8A’s built on it but the number is really too small to draw any definite conclusion. On Contract LV 1697 there is data plate information showing that both HUPs and HUWs were built.

As always, there are more questions raised than answered.

Brian
