Just wondering how I would go about getting gaskets for my motor. I have had a couple of my auto parts suppliers looking and so far no luck.

where possible try and save as many of your gaskets as possible it makes identifying which ones you need a bit easier (if you are unsure as to what engine you have)

Hi Carl. When replacing your gaskets a rookie mistake is to oil or grease your new gaskets thinking that they will seal better when they are squeezed down. I have heard of this being done ,but can tell you don't do this..put them on the way they come out of the package and keep the old ones to check against the new kit..You may find that some kits are universal to fit two or three different modifications or models. You will have extra gaskets in this case and they can be confusing unless you are dealing with and rebuilding all the time. Make sure that the surfaces are clean and scraped bare..any old gasket or residue on the mating surfaces will result in a leak of vacuum..exhaust..intake..glycol or any manner of goop that you are trying to seal against. Once the surfaces are as clean as you think they should be,spray the surfaces with brake cleaner and go over them one more time before fitting your new gaskets.. a dab or two of high temp silicone in the corners of the intake manifold gasket where the heads,block and intake manifolds meet,front and back, is wise and will be OK. but just a thin dab.. Go hang out at an engine re-builders for a day or two volunteer work to get a little experience. Or befriend some old school mechanic and get him involved in your project..This may involve transporting him to and fro and beer but well worth the effort.. Some old mechanics just love hanging out with a rebuild project.. Good luck and post pictures.
