Juli 2011 13:38 An: 'committee@mvca.au' Betreff: WG: First world war - Army motor vehicles as of 1918 Gentlemen, the following mail was sent by me to the Australian War Museum which returned the message to me stating that I might contact your club for information since they do not have the sources to investigate.. So may I please address you with the details of my 1918 Buick E 44 Roadster and if you could unearth some facts concerning her military history inside the than Royal Australian Forces fom 1918 onwards. With kindest regards Peter Schack Deutsches Automuseum Schloss Langenburg Von: Peter Schack [mailto:schack-history@gmx.de] Gesendet: Mittwoch, 13. Juli 2011 10:04 An: 'mht@awm.gov.au' Betreff: First world war - Army motorvehicles as of 1918 Gentlemen, We happened to own the following motorcar which is said to be delivered to the Australian Forces in WWI MAKE BUICK (American built) Year 1918 Model E 44 Body open 2-seater (roadster) Engine 4 litre/45 hp six-cylinder VIN 435437 Research in the USA at Buick heritage confirmed, that a batch of 275 units have been built by special order with right hand steering/right hand gear lever for the Australian Army. The known history says that she was sold at an auction in Sidney in the late 1960ies/early 1970ies probably from a private owner already. The Buyer was Mr. Max Fenner of Sidney who moved to Switzerland later taking the car to Switzerland as well. She was bought by us in 1972 from Mr. Fenner and is still in our Museum in Langenburg/Germany. She got recommissioned recently and is fully operative again taking part in vintage motoring events. Questions are: Do you have a military service-history of this car/or the group of 275 units ? When did the Army deactivate her ? At what date she was sold as surplus stock into private ownership ? I would appreciate your comments very much for we like to describe her complete history to the visitors of our Museum And to the public when presenting her at vintage motoring events all over Europe in driving conditions. We will provide you with proper photography if wanted showing VIN 435437 in all her new/old beauty. By the way she is painted in a light green over brown fenders and without any brightwork. Here are a couple of interesting photos of a 1918 Buick E44.
Sorry, I don't have any info about Australian Army use. A rusty 1918 Buick E44 has recently turned up in Western Australia. Rick
