Who has experience with the import off a carrier to Europe ?
Are there any restrictions ? Under with category does it fall ? With tax duties are involved ? The reason I ask is that I would like to import one but I have been told it will not be handled as a "normal" oldtimer. So what's your experience ? Each country within Europe has it own rules on the subject so it would be interesting to know what the differences are. Maybe it easier and cheaper to do it through the UK and than transport it to The Netherlands. Maybe not. Who knows more ? Cheers, Danny

UK you pay 5% tax on the purchase price and freight of the vehicle (from Canada)
there are wharfage, moving costs to consider. so as a very basic example you need to cost in the following * Cost to move it from where it stands to Toronto (or the port it will leave from) * shore to ship handling costs * Customs inspection fees * import duties as mentioned above * ship to shore charges

should also point out that the vehicle needs to be very well cleaned, free of dirt, folliage / moss. oils and fuel... otherwise you get billed big style by the inspectors as they wont allow the crate to be loaded to the vessel

Till the 1-1-2011 in Holland (or The Netherlands if you will) there was no import tax on oldtimers older than 25 or 30 years (not sure which one) and 6% VAT over the purchase plus transport costs.
After 1-1-2011 still no Import tax on oldtimers but the VAT changed to 19% Besides that there are off coarse the cost off shipping, declarations etc. I asked a firm in Holland to what it should cost to transport and make the declarations for customs. I got a reply that it's not an oldtimer but a Armoured vehicle and other rules apply. Import tax would be 1,7% and VAT 19%

Interesting question. It probably is one of those cases where the grey areas in the regulations give room to manoeuver both in your advantage as well as disadvantage. As you won't be able to register it for the road, you do not need to import it as a motor vehicle. Try finding out if there is an "agricultural vehicle" category or similar where other rules apply. You could even import it as "mechanical spares"? Or, import via Belgium or any other country in the vicinity where they will let you import scrap metal for nothing. Hello Michael,
Indeed the decision DV2010-537M has been withdraw. And as such the import off oldtimers which are (for now still) covered in the category antiquities are back to 6% VAT. The 6% VAT will be calculated over the purchase price plus transport costs till the dutch border. Cheers, Danny
