Hi
Having spoken to Shaun and Kevin earlier in the year we decided to do a run of more cast parts. This time it will be the bracket for the smoke discharger fitted on the right side hull armour TL 12458 and the catches found on the lockers TL 2901 & TL 12499. All will be steel, I'm going to the foundry this week all being well so i'll get some quotes. As before they will be cast off new patterns that have been made to allow for shrinkage. This time i haven't added the part numbers as last time this caused some members to have issues with authenticity of real parts against reproductions. other than the part numbers they are identical. Ben, I would like part numbers on mine, if people dont want them they can always file them off. I cant recall this being up for discussion.

Ben told me with regards the catches at least that he'd made several attempts to add the part numbers, and he wasnt happy with the result. I my self am happy to have my catches with no part numbers. Just to have them will be fantastic.

The latches won't have the numbers as they are too small to recreate and look reasonable.
The smoke bracket original that I copied has the numbers, date etc but the numbers are so close together and disguised by the texture of the sand casting that they are almost unreadable. I'll have a look at copying the numbers but they results may be less than ideal. Ben |

I would be interested in a discharger bracket, are the latches not identical to chieftain latches ?

I am interested in one of the brackets for the smoke discharger. I have all the rest of the bits now, just short of the bracket. Just verifying that it is one for the Mk1*. Let us know the cost of the bracket and latches please. Thanks, Doug |

I visited the foundry today. I can get the round thumb screws for the upper engine covers and the wing nut style lower engine cover screw for £5 each, that will require you to drill out and tap the upper type and run a die down the lower style. This is easy enough to do but I want to make it clear you will get blanks with no thread.
The latches for the lockers etc are £10 for a complete assembly as shown above, hinge and lever, again these will need drilling by you and the wire hoops adding The discharger bracket was quite expensive, I'm trying plan B tomorrow in the hope it will be cheaper but it is quite a chunk of steel to have cast. The first quote will work out at around £80 each As with the parts before I have worked the prices out on getting a reasonable quantity made, if there isn't enough interest I won't be able to order that type of part. Are these parts from cast iron or cast steel? The foundry I spoke to here in London would do cast steel, but wanted a minimum run of 200 pieces. I would be interested in 8 of the lower engine cover screws (thumb screw). Perry |

All cast steel, quantity is to cover the outlay of initial tooling costs. You could order 1 if you wanted, it would just be expensive.

The smoke discharge bracket that I was trying to find out info. on is - CTL 1381A Assy. on page 219, illustration N0.44, in the Carrier Universal Mk1*and Mk11*, Illustrated parts Catalogue-1941-4. For clarification, (I`m a bit slow on the uptake) is this the bracket you are trying to make casts of? Thanks, Doug |

Hard to say if an original is turned or cast as I don't have one to hand. However a turned one will look very sharp and the one I have to copy has a nice worn cast look, don't think they'd be much in the price.

No Botha matey I had one but lent it to Martyn to copy, he made some fantastic copies on a lathe. I must get mine back come to think about it. Do you need anything else to pattern I am coming down country next Friday..... Drop me an email mate.

The original round nuts for the upper engine covers were turned and knurled from round stock on a lathe. Very easy to duplicate and are virtually impossible to tell from the original, except the fact that they look new and have no pitting or wear.

Yes, the upper ones do seem to be machined. As they're not cast parts I'll officially hand that project over to someone else:-)

Hi, Those upper engine cover 'knurled' retainers come in two thread sizes, i think early carriers have smaller threads than latter Mk2, I have original ones here of both sizes.

Not that it matters for our purposes! But would those lower thumb screws more likely have been forged? (Hot metal under a press). It would seem a quicker way to stamp them out??

The two samples I have of the lower thumbscrews are forged. They have a wide seam and the part number is stamped in, which indicates a forging. You are absolutely correct, forging would be a faster way to mass produce these screws.
