On 23 Nov 1945 the Armoured Troops (Pantsertroepen) of the Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL) was instituted.
The Depot in Batavia (Jakarta) only had a few tanks and ACs that had survived WW 2. In early 1946 the British Government decided that the KNIL should take over equipment from 15th Indian Army Corps and armoured vehicles from 11th Prince Albert and Victor´s Own Cavalry. The "new" KNIL had 4 tank Sqns equipped with Stuart tanks. But here is a picture that puzzles me: Sherman tanks. KNIL never had such - so are those from the Netherlands Army sent to NEI from Europe?

Stellan,
These are not KNIL tanks, but Royal NL Marines. A brigade sized unit was trained and fully equipped in the US and they had a squadron of HVSS 105mm Shermans. Also emploed were recce troops with Halftracks and M8 Armoured cars (this unit included some Dutch Army officers, Hussars, but not KNIL men, I think). Greetings Nuyt |
