I found some markings on the rear armour of my MkII this afternoon. Anyone know if S D Galt was the manufacture or an inspection stamp and is 81153 the standard of the armour.?
Thanks Stephen Last edited by stephen crowhurst; 21-06-14 at 18:53. |

Wasn't Galt the company that made saw blades, and used their experience in that to straighten the raw armour after heat treating? Perhaps the SD was for steel division? It could also represent the foundry that cast the steel. I have the same mark in a few locations of my carrier, along with numbers, but I don't recall them right now.

Shurly Dietrich Atkins of Galt, Ontario, Canada.
Yes, they were contracted to heat treat and straighten 45,000 ton of the plate manufactured by Dominion Foundry and Steel Company of Hamilton. (DOFASCO). The SDA company stamp can be found on the plates. The late Dr. Wm Gregg published some research in this area. He, (Gregg) wrote the plates were then punched by International Harvester in Hamilton, shipped to the Windsor area and assembled by Dominion Bridge into hulls. The hulls were shipped by rail to the Ford assembly plant. There are images posted on MLU of the hulls being delivered to Ford Windsor. Thanks for the refresher Micheal. I knew I had read about it some time in the distant past. The water is starting to run grey though.

A "wow" moment for me too. About 10 years ago I purchased at a farm auction a Bickle Seagrave trailer pump in Wiarton, Ontario. I have the documentation around here somewhere but the federal government had about thousand of these produced for the ARP - Air Raid Precautions in '42. I'm still in the learning curve but I'm pretty sure it's the same flathead that's in a carrier attached to a 450 GPM pump. According what I have, this particular pump was posted to Galt, Ontario. Galt had a base for the Commonwealth Air Training Plan which I assumed this pump was used to protect. I suppose it could also have been used to protect Shurly Dietrich Atkins...
Small world. I haven't done much work on the pump trailer but it's on the "to do" list. Hopefully mine will be as nicely restored as this example that is in Victoria, BC Mike Snetsinger |
