1/35 scale model work
Hi Guys just thought you may like to see some 1/35 scale masters for a few WW2 Aussie Fords I am doing at present.
Shown are the 1939 Ford roadster cab cowl unit, 1941 dash and Marmon/Herrington front and rear axles for 1939-1941. Axles are kit parts modified to correct sizes while the Cowl is a montage of kit and plastic parts with filler where need be. Filler still has to be sanded (tomorrow when dry) and I still have to add the cowl vent. Once this is done I will make a silicon mold of it and cast it in resin. hope you like these.

Thanks Howard.
IMHO my modelling skills pale before the skills of the people who do 1/1 rebuilds I'll add more as I slowly continue this one and many thanks must go to those who willingly measure the real things for me to work to.

next step was to add pouring sprues to the cowl. These are the gaps to pour resin into the mold. Hopefully these will do the trick of getting the resin to form the cowl in the mold. The smaller sprue on top of the windscreen is to try and prevent air pockets forming in the windscreen frame during pouring. This will be cut off once the part is demolded.
This will be a two piece mold so next step is to set up the mold box and use clay to blank off one side as one half of the mold is poured using silicon.

Cliff, your work is excellent as always, and has long been an inspiration to me as a builder of model Aussie vehicles. If you've ever bought any MouseHouse products, you might have seen some of my work.
So the big question is, are you able to produce some extra MH axles that I could buy from you? My nearly built No.3A tractor needs some. And while I'm asking, do you know what you will be doing for the 18 inch wheels/tyres? Keep on building, Allan |

I have ordered a resin set of Diamond T wheels from Libor at Mirror/LZ models as they are approximately the correct size and I will make new centres for them and add filler for the larger tyre size and make tread. If that does not work I will try to make my own from blanks using my dremel and a lot of swear words LOL . About to de-mold the first cowl and axle pour this morning. Happy to do a deal with you with parts etc. I have PM'ed you my email and phone number. Always happy to talk. If you phone mornings are better for me please.

have done a little more on the cab. Parts are just tacked together for now. The cowl is the 1941 type which I also did a full firewall for. I also found the 1939 one pictured earlier in the thread was incorrect with the windscreen being 1mm too low. It was only a 10mm high opening and should have been 11mm high!
Creamy parts are resin copies, white is plastic sheet. rear of cab still needs to be finished as does the seat and interior but it is getting there now.

A change
I discovered that Polish Company IBG produced a South African Ford Marmon Herrington Recon Armoured car in 1/35 scale and looking at photos of the parts realised that almost all the chassis parts were the ones I needed for my LP3A Ford M/H gun tractor so I purchased a kit. BUT when it arrived it was the early Mk1 4X2 version and not the 4X4 one I wanted. So another one of the later Marks was ordered and when the second kit arrived it had all the M/H conversion parts I needed. I then made the decision not to continue trying to scratch build all my parts for a full kit but to convert the chassis of the IBG kit into the LP3A using parts of the original ICM kit (mainly modified Body parts) plus making parts as I needed to give a fairly detailed chassis and engine bay so the bonnet could be left open, plus my home made roaster body and (still to build) the rear body. These I will reproduce in resin at a later date.
I also have had a go at making my own 18in directional pattern Aussie wheels as well. Still have the wheel centres to do but will cast as a separate item so I can use the trye and rim for other projects as well. Not perfect but OK for a first time effort working by hand with no fancy computer drawing program.

the motor and tyre. Let me know what you all think and can someone give me the thickness of the Ford radiator please?

Cliff,
I'm in Italy till late October hence the delay with your other requests. On the radiator, the MH has a standard Ford radiator but the core is about 4" longer with a bigger shroud accordingly. I'm not sure if that is also what went in Aussie Bren gun carriers. But someone will tell us. |

The engine and tyres look great by the way. So can you show a few more photos of the process. I find it intriguing how you actually do it.

these are the 11.00X18in tyres and rims I have made for the Marmon Herrington LP3 and 3A gun tractors. Made using 1mm plastic circles glued together then shaped with a blade and sandpaper. Tread was made with individual pieces of plastic cut to size and glued on piece by piece.
last pic shows the roaster cab body again....Boy they look good don't they LOL

A bit more progress on the LP3A. Still a lot of detailing and the tilt and roaster cab top to make. Putting the Resicast 18Ib gun and limber altered to the Aussie type behind this with crew in back and front of the LP3A

at last an update
finally finishing this one off. Did my first soldering on the rear canopy tilt and have modified the Resicast 18lb gun and limber to Australian specs. Still a lot of detail work to do but it is coming along now.
Any comments welcome

Cliff, Do you need any close details of the cabin hood bows or are you not putting a hood on it?

Jack I am adding the hood. I originally just used straight wire but did not like it so made another as close to the diagram you originally sent me of the hood bows.
Only thing I am not 100% sure of is the height. Can you do a measurement for me from the top of the doors to the top of the front bow for me please? Again thanks for all your help with this model it would not have got this far without all the details you have provided

Hello Cliff,
Your Ford gun tracktor is looking very good. It looks cool with the limber and gun in tow. I have not done anything on my Ford sadly. But I have been busy with this one.. This is the test build of the first castings. If all goes well it will be for sale by the end of August. |
