Good day,
On ANZAC Day I have a small display in my front paddock of what ever vehicles I can get running, I usually have an Australian flag mounted on a flagstaff on the front bumper of my half ton Dodge. This year for the 100 year Gallipoli anniversary I am going to put an Australian flag and a New Zealand flag on my front gate on special flag holders I am making. I would also like to put a British flag on my Bedford QLB, US WW2 era flag on the Dodge and a Canadian flag on the C60L, if I can get it back together enough. Now, I have purchased a Canadian flag that is of the WW2 era, would it be appropriate to use that flag, or should I use a current Canadian flag. I haven't seen any WW2 era Canadian flags on Canadian vehicles in WW2, I probably haven't been looking in the correct places. What are your thoughts? Cheers Ken

The Red Ensign, with green leaves on the coat of arms on the fly.
The ensign was used from 1921-1957 thereby encompassing the C60 era. I am, yr Colonial colleague...etc

Hi Ken. As per Jon, the Red Ensign is the historically correct flag to use for WW2 Canadian Military displays. If your display was of a 'Then and Now' nature, you could include the current Maple Leaf flag.
Technically speaking the American Flag has undergone it's own changes over time as well. To correct with it in a WW2 display, it should only have 48 stars. Have fun with is all and hope cooler weather has arrived down your way finally. David |

If you can't find a Red Ensign, the current Ontario flag is very close (and few observers know the difference).

Thanks fellas,
When I researched the flag to make sure I was buying the correct colours etc I discovered that some ebay sellers try to sell flags with the small detailed parts the wrong colours. Hopefully I have got it right. I was thinking I should have a current flag to put with the truck at other displays, as there wouldn't be many people in Australia that know the older Canadian flag. I have a 48 star US flag but it is nice to have confirmation I am on the correct track. I will have a look at the Ontario flag to compare. Thanks for your input. Cheers Ken

As an English Colony, I have seen many wartime photos taken in Canada where the use of the Union Jack is very prevalent- no Red Ensigns anywhere to be found...
Specifically, there ate a bunch of pics floating around of new Canadian Army vehicles which were debuted at the CNE ( Canadian National Exposition) in Toronto in the early war years. |
