It's a Bendix compass and they were in the M3 Stuarts and lots of other machines including aircraft. I don't know what that particular one is out of.

Looks a lot like this... so presumably Stuart Tank... and therefore a bargain for someone at 100 dollars!

Yes and no
Pioneer Bendix 1828 or 1830. It's missing the bottom shock mounts, side plates, and main mounting bracket.
Could be found originally on 20% of DUKWs and all the early Weasels, so somebody round your way will want it.

I picked it up this afternoon. The guy was about 45 minutes away from me. It is identical to one I saw a few years back (less the mount) that had a decal saying it was 'Modified for the Armoured Car Fox 1'. That got my interest to say the least. I had no idea Fox had a compass nor is there one mentioned in the manual or parts book.
So my question is...does anyone have any information on how or where this compass was mounted in a Fox armoured car? I've found information on its use in an M8 and maybe it was similar? I'd very much like to install this piece in my old girl. |

compass
I have the ability to ruin a compass by going around it with my finger three or four times .The needle will be stuck for ever. When I worked in the oil patch making new road they would give me a compass and in a day later it was toast .ps. I also find water .with any thing over 10" long .metal rod ,broom, cardboard ect.

My wife did the same to wrist watches. The jeweler honouring the warranty gave up figuring out why and finally said "go buy your watches from somebody else". Then there was this guy at work who bent two metal coat hangers into a 'seven' shape, loosely held the short ends and witched for underground utilities. I called BS on this because, to surveyors, there are a hundred clues to where pipes are buried and I think he was really using those while claiming mystical powers. And, it is customary in rural Ontario to witch a well location before the drill arrives. Again a little sketchy because in most places you're going to find water anyway and in areas where that isn't true, the witchers batted 50%. |

Dad bought my brother and I a watch .mine never worked ,I thought I got the bad one. Last Oct the farm paper in western Canada did a whole page on me about witching .I can find bones, metal, wood, ear rings ,tell you within a foot how deep ,I use welding rods bent for handle ,willow stick ,house broom ,piece of card board ,2x4 board ,anything longer than a table knife .Also everything that I hold starts to swing .When I made roads for the oil patch I could cross a valley and still make a strait road even though I could not see where I came from .They thought I was crazy .This has to do with electricity in the body .Not everyone has this ability
