MKII* fuel tank sender
I am going to build a fuel tank for my carrier and am wondering what fuel tank sender I should use.The carrier is still 6v and will stay that way. Is there a difference in 12 or 6 volt senders? Is a modern universal sender going to work?
Thanks,Dave |

From what I gather on the net, a 12 volt Stewart Warner gauge has a resistance of 240 to 30 ohms. Many of the aftermarket sending units match this resistance range. However, the 6 volt gauges are supposed to run from 90 to 0 ohms.
A way to get around this might be to install a potentiometer inline and with the 12v sending unit fuel arm to full, adjust the potentiometer to read full. Or you can do it the other way around to match with "empty", which, in my experience, is more important/critical. A google search shows plenty of 90-0 ohm sending units available from Summit racing. You will want to use either an adapter ring to go from the ford 6 bolt ring to the SW 5 bolt ring, or else get a 5 bolt ring if you are making new tanks. |

When I needed to replace the senders on my Mk2* I sent photos to www.fillingstation.com in the USA of my originals who were able to match them to the modern equivalent including the 6 hole fitting and 6V. Since you are building new tanks you could go for any suitable 6V sender which they may be able to supply. Unfortunately I cannot find the invoice and I have tried contacting them before to get the part number for someone else but they do not keep records of customers that long. Could be worth trying them.
