IIRC it is a small motorbike that every troop leader had on the back of his tank. This was to get him to orders quicker in a Sqn/Regt'l leaguer. They weren't in service long.

C'mon, Darrell...a Troop Leader doesn't go to a"leaguer" for an "O" Gp... he goes to a "laager".

How this bastardization of the proper term, first used during the Boer War, escapes me.

One arranges oneself, in a defensive posture, in a laager. Note the spelling... comments, Hanno, Dirk, et al?

Mvg Jon

From http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Laager:
Quote:
laager: A defensive encampment encircled by armored vehicles or wagons.

[Alteration of obsolete Afrikaans lager, probably from German Lager, camp, lair, from Middle High German leger, bed, lair, from Old High German legar; see legh- in Indo-European roots.]
My English-Dutch Van Dale dictionary gives three possibilities for spelling: laager, lager, leaguer....

HTH,
Hanno

I thought this was a vehicle forum not Grade 10 Spelling class!!

Remember guys, that to be a Zipperhead, you don't have to be well educated!! We're not Artillerymen after all!!

Jon has it correct but did anyone notice that "Hide" would be more applicable? In a Laager everyone is close so Troopy wouldn't need a "Tote-Goat".

A-ha!!! I accept your humble apologies!!

No news though, huh?

Tote-Goat? Anyone?

OK, Zipperhead...at least you're still on the trace.

On a more serious note, what are your MOCs going to change to while your heavy Tango call signs rot away in Quebec?

India 031s have lost their 81mm, having to request FDF etc from Golf call signs, now you guys are losing your Tango battlefield capabilities.

No problem, I guess...just apply to the Great Ombud, Marin, and get a just and balanced decision. Humphf!

Sorry, to others lurking about...just had to get this off my chest...forgive me for quoting things which are really relevant to todays's Army.

It's a terrible indictment that we Canadians have no defence policy in place. Our whole "raison d'etre" rests upon the whim of the superpower to our south.

Rant ends..Silent hours begin, this Call Sign is on listening watch...

AFAIK our MOC won't change (again).

When I got in I was 011 Crewman. Then it changed to 011 Armoured Soldier. So gender was at the base of the last change!!

Without tanks, we're still somewhat armoured in that there LAV dealy. I pity the Infantry as they're the ones I won't be exposing myself for, in my Stryker, too much.

C'mon, someone must know what I'm talking about.

Yeah, I pity the PBI (Poor Bloody Infantry), 031s who might be close to your Stryker when, as you fire APFSDS broadside, the friggin' thing tips over and crushes the Herbies nearby.

RCAC needs MBTs, in order to meet any perceived or real battlefield threat.

You know it, I know it... how is it that the Liberal jerks at Fort Fumble can't understand it?:

BTW, speaking of Fort Fumble, how's things in Pet? Duty Squadron shovelling off the parade square?

Same ole, same ole. 85 feet of snow and cold as hell.

Do you really think we could make the young soldier of today shovel a parade square?

If they didn't call the ombudsman, the Union guys from PSAC would!!:

In my day I knew Sgts that could clean it with their colourful vocabulary alone!! Sigh. Now I'm meloncholy.

Tote Goat? Anyone? Anyone?

OK, 011 type guy...

You keep asking about the Tote goat.

AFAICR, these were limited production primarily intended for fwd recce taskings.

In the back of my feeble brain, I think I remember the designator M998???Yes/No?

I could be (and probably am) wrong, but I'm fairly sure that the M series number consisted of 3 numbers after the "M".

Over to you, and give an "Eyes Left" to the old 8 CH hangars, as you go down the hill to the Mattawa Plain.

(Are the hangars still there?)

Well, not as : : as I am. Been following this thread to await the detail about a small motorbike carried on the back of the highly successful and first ever MBT.

I cannot for the life of me believe the British Army had such a device on their Cents and of course the word "tote" is unique to the N. American continent; it is non-existent here and would be wholly alien to us.

The only use of "tote" here is the on-course horse betting system using averaged odds and shortened to the colloquial "tote" from the official "Totaliser".

Darrell, all I can find when I google "Tote Goat" are pictures of small rudimentary motorbikes with balloon tyres. Reminds me of the Honda Monkey my uncle used to own. No reference to any use with the military, though. Could it be they were tested and found unsuitable to run circles around the laager?

Hi guys

Thanx for the input. Google was no help at all to me but the "Tote Goat" results Hanno mentions is similar to what I'm after. Maybe even the same vehicle but "militarized". I know I've seen pics of them on the back of Cdn Centurions. I believe they were strictly a Cdn Army piece of kit, FV623.

Surrender? Never!!

D

PS Jon, they're still there and the RCD use them. All three at the top of the hill and two newer ones built in the middle nineties. I have a FGH reunion to guide around in May.

Look what I found!!
