From a transcript of a radio conversation released by the Chief of Naval Operations on 10 Oct 1995, between a US Navy vessel and Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland:

Americans: "Please divert your course 15 degrees to the north to avoid a collision."

Canadians: "Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision."

Americans: "This is the captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course."

Canadians: "No, I say again, divert YOUR course."

Americans: "This is the aircraft carrier USS Missouri. We are a large warship of the US Navy. DIVERT YOUR COURSE *NOW*."

Canadians: "We are a lighthouse. Your call."

CARMAN:
I enjoyed your Naval joke and I do not like to nit pick but you sure would have one hell of a time trying to land and airoplane on the Missouri as it is not an aircraft carrier but a battleship. We sure want the Navy to know, that we know our Naval crafts. By the way this was the ship on which the Japanese signed the final surrender documents.

Hanno

I took this photo of the Missouri in the State of Washington in 1978. I believe if my memory holds right President Reagan ordered this ship re-fitted and it went back to the fleet, (the date I am not sure.) It should have been obvious that large battle ships are a liability rather than an asset to modern Naval warfare.

Hello Norm ... thanks for your reply (and it's nice to see you posting still)

Well ... ignorance is cured by enlightenment One of the beauties of MLU is that wrong information is quickly spotted by someone who knows it's wrong or off somehow, therefore enlightenment can happen I scooped and pasted the story as a "funny" not knowing the validity ... knowing I didn't know "facts" and that someone would surely say something if I posted something that needed to be "set right" ...

I agree with Hanno that that is indeed an awesome photo ... visually ... I can't comment on the history or the ship itself... but it's a powerful photo in and of itself. Which reminds me ... it's time to try Geoff's DVD player to see if I can finally view that CD ... I'm impatient to (a long time ago : )

Hey Norm, is it Spring there yet?

Default PS:L But of course....

...but of course, Norm, if I were to fly a pixie plane, being the Pixie Witch that I am, then surely I could land on even a (Canadian) dime?
