Telephone Set D.MK V

Hi everyone

I just picked up a field telephone at my local militaria/gun show the other day.

The plate inside says that its a Telephone Set D.Mk V. It was made by P.E.W. Ltd in 1943. Serial # 11880

The handset is marked "Tele. HD. No2 Canadian"

The strap for it is marked "P.E.W. Ltd 1942" and has a very stylized "C" broad arrow.

My main question is what are the 2 web loops and buckle for on the strap? I can't find anything in my books baout the CDN telephones or this particualr strap.

I understand from a radio collector friend that the loops on the strap are for an earch spike.

War-time phone cable was only single core with the earch literally going to earch. I will try and dig out a picture.

Neil beat me to the punch. I asked one of our leading communications authorities about these loops and was also informed that they were for holding an earthing spike. He has never seen one so would be interested if an image came up.

I thought that it was common knowledge that EARCH stood for Ecumenical Auditory Remote Connection to Heaven. This was a tool supplied for use on field telephones by high powered military padres and the like in order to request emergency top cover, thunderboplts and similar interventions. Unfortunately the unit was fitted with an experimental scrambler that could cause extreme distortion causing rains of fish, jam donuts and other unfortunate phenomina. This caused it to be abandoned in favour of the older well established device of just putting the hands together.

Thanks for the replys. It does mention an earth spike on the instruction plate inside the lid.

I will keep my eyes out for one at the various shows.

I mis-quoted my source last night, he actually described the item as an Earthing Peg, not spike.

Good luck finding any earth pins. They're scarce as hell.

If you find any at a gun/militaria show, buy 'em all up.

Would you be so kind as to provide us with some more pictures and maybe some dimensions to enable those of us who have dreamt in vain of encountering an earth pin to replicate one?

Yours is the only specimen I have seen in captivity...WOW!

The British/Canadian/Australian Field Telephones could use 2 line cable, or single and earth. Likewise the Fullerphone.

I would'nt blame you if you decided to keep the information to yourself, but hope springs eternal......

Happened to be digging through some stuff this evening and voila! earthing pins. Just happen to have a couple remote stes with shown web straps and the earthing pins fit, as per Bruce's pic. May have a source for some more, will keep you posted...
