Default Pacific Junkyards

Here are a couple from Lae New Guinea.
Wonder if the vehicles ever made it back or were crushed and dumped??

Hi,

Thanks for posting the great pictures. Makes you wonder what was left around the world to rot.

Cheers,
Greg

Bill,

I think most of this stuff was sold locally in New Guinea after the war. Many scrap dealers made their fortune including Thiess brothers, now one of Australia's largest construction companies.

I spent 6 years in New Guinea during the 70's and spent a lot of time chasing old vehicles and aircraft. There are still big dumps in the jungle around Lae where one can spend days clambering over jeeps, trucks and every type of equipment. It is hard going and those squeamish about thorny vines, spiders and mosquitoes - lots of mosquitoes - soon give up. I visited a couple of these dumps only last yar and they are still there. Everything is completely STUFFED from rust.

I did get a good jeep and Willys trailer from Wau and brought them home to Australia (The army paid for transport of one car and trailer when you were reposted)

About 18 months ago I visited a huge dump outside Port Moresby (on the dry side of New Guinea). It contains a vast range of Dodge products with a smattering of jeeps and staff cars. 90% of the vehicles are either VC or early 1/2 ton range of all types including rare panel vans, lots of carryalls, ambulances and of course weapon carriers. Strange that most of the mechanicals are missng and it is just acres of bodies - most restorable with plenty of work!

I have lots of photos but am working in Bhutan for the UN at the moment where the internet is steam driven. Will try to attach some.
