I used to use off the shelf DOT 3 when I was driving them in the army.

one of the biggest incompatabilities in brake fluids is unknowingly mixing the regular stuff with the newer silicon based fluid, as they are definatly not compatable and will cause you all kinds of problems. also, the silicon fluid can dammage the rubber parts in some vehicle brake systems, but from what i have read, this mostly applies to older vehicles. i would use dot 3 for the iltis.
