Maybe we can present them at a gather up at Gracies.. Well bring pictures and the old lad would like that.. I'm sure the old lad would like that and I volunteer driving duties..I have a new car which we will go pick him up in fine style.. and you and I will deliver.. I'm in.. Can you make this happen.. I'm sure that the ROTers and Gracies could get some good press out of this..Of course the citizen could be notified..I have the writer.. Let me know.

Good on you Clive. If there is something I can do to help, just ask.
I have to wonder....am I to understand he survived being shot down? If this was a parachute event, would he not have had the gold Catapiller as well?? |

I will certainly thnk about doing this at Gracie's but we will have to invite the Sun - not the Citizen. Good question about the Caterpillar - are reproductions available?

I am still waiting to hear which medals need to be replaced. From the initial story I think that it is the 39-45 War Medal, the 39-45 Star and the F&G Star.
Today's Ottawa Sun article

Cliff, The medal entitlement is as I suspected. Although his War Medal was a Brit-issue I have already promised hima Canadian one - I explained that it takes a better shine The gentleman was overjoyed and thanked me several times although I told him that this was my thanks to him for what he did 60+ years ago. The second Sun article caught me by surprise as I specifically told the paper that I didn't want any publicity over this. David Hiorth, of Army Outfitters in Toronto, has taken on the responsibility for providing the actual medals and of mounting these. He is refusing any compensation but I am sure that he will allow me to buy a few rounds when I am next in Toronto. With any luck I will be able to present the medals by mid next week. Thanks to everyone for their offers to donate, assist, etc...

9-10 Apr Rotting at Gracies
Hi all:
I should be back on Sun 8 Apr and will be aval for the gathering. Bravo Zulu to all involved. The Sun article mentions "passengers" and I wonder if they don't understand the difference between pax and crew or did our vet fly transports? (Clive: I know you've thought of it but is he entitled to the Aircrew Europe bar?) Mil veh scene here is non-existant but I have lots of neat photos of the national independence day parade and roll past plus some '50s Brit armour used as gate guards (Saladin and Ferret). I'll print up an MLU page and take a photo at one of the forts. Cheers! Meltin' Mike in Ghana

The gentleman whose medals were stolen called me last night to say that they had been found. They were located under his bed and it is unsure if the logbook and other items were still there. It appears that the thieves may have thrown them out when rifling the briefcase - which has not been found.
My thanks to everyone for their kind offers. Thanks to Marway and Army Outfitters who both offfered to replace the medals - I accepted Dave Hiorth's kind offer but will now return those medals to him. I have offered to meet Mr Larcombe on Saturday morning and I have told him that I would like to take his medals and get them mounted. He was very moved by this. In fact, he couldn't get over the number of calls he received from across Canada offering support. Thanks again.
