Well, it looks like I know what I will be doing the next little while. Like I said...suprise package or LAND ANCHOR. Kidding aside, when I started to inspect the engine I noticed that some of the head bolts where in the wrong location. Long one in a short hole....trouble in the butts!!!!

Here is a shot of the other side, note the water cooling jacket around the exhaust. Wait till you see the transmission shifting arrangement!!!???

Marine (as in boats, not USMC) engines can be a real B**** unless you know the history of them. If they have been used in a salt water environment many years ago, they're only good for a garden ornament, or maybe the reluctant donor of a few spares. Unless you KNOW they are from a freshwater boat, I wouldn't even consider rebuilding them. Some of the studs in a flathead will go into blind threaded holes while others go into the water jacket. It depends how diligent the original builder was as to wether the threads were treated with anti-seize paste (or Loctite). If this engine has seen salt water, corrosion will seep along the threads and you will get a broken stud. Oh. I see you might have already discovered that! ![]() Anyway, relax, it's only a '49-'53 C8BA block, not a wartime CMP or Carrier Flathead! ![]() |

Well I am about to open up the bottom end and have been musing about the possibility of swapping the crank, con rods, camm, fuel pump shaft and any other goodie that I might need for a 42 block....any comments about increased horsepower and or possible difficulties that I may encounter? I know I am putting the cart before the horse as I still do not know the condition of the bottom end. I do know that there is reasonably fressh oil in the crankcase and I am hopeful.
I was going to post more pics but it seems the Frau has the digi and has left town for a break from all the olive drab. ![]() |

After examining the crank and micing it, it is still standard size and has not been altered. As the pics show (sorry for poor quality) the sludge and water was clearly in the oil journals. Hopefully some fine emery and polishing will be enough.
