Default What is this houseplant?

Hi Folks,

I inherited this big houseplant a couple of days ago and have been trying to find out two things:

1) What is the name of the plant (what kind is it?)

2) Can simple cuttings be taken from it to start a new plant (if I cut a bit off, will it root in water?)

ANy help appreciated ... thanks!!!

Ma Yappy the Horticulturalist Wanna Be (for this plant anyways )

Talking The name of the plant

Hi Ma

1. the name of the plant is Ethel, and it's a green plant with leaves.

2. Cuttings don't start things. You might like to try keys or the starter button. ( .... and only fish root in water. )

Name and address withheld

.... you guys are bad

Now ... plant in question is GREEN ... like the green of military vehicles. It's name is Sargent Major Greentree, a patriotic Candaian immigrant (for many MANY generations) and is in charge of oxegenating Canadian airspace (a long-time family history of Canadian service) ... I would like to clone more troops from SM Greentree, for the wellbeing of this little localized corner of Canada airspace ... can it be done?

Ma take a tip cutting of fairly new growth. Leave the top two leaves on but cut them in half. With a sharp knife gently put a slot up under the bark on each side at the cut end. Dip in honey (natural runny not processed like some) and plant in a bit of potting mix. Put a plastic bag over plant and pot (like a mini greenhouse) and it should form roots in about 6 to 8 weeks.

Thanks for that Cliff ... will give that a shot when I can pick up some potting soil.

I started an avacado plant from an avacado pit ... don't toss those avacado pits if you like big house plants - they can grow into huge plants ... polk 4 toothpicks in the sides of a pit and sit the pits/picks on a glass rim, bottom of pit sittig in water, and it will root ... plant when rooted ... voila. I always forget which end of the pit to put in the water though

How To avocado tree from the pits

Trivia
Previously, avocados had a long-standing stigma as a sexual stimulant and were not purchased or consumed by any person wishing to preserve a chaste image.

Growers had to sponsor a public relations campaign to debunk the avocado's unsavory reputation before they eventually became popular. Avocados were known by the Aztecs as "the fertility vegetable".

In the pre-Incan city of Chan Chan, archaeologists have unearthed a large water jar, dated around 900 A.D., in the shape of an avocado.

Stating something extremely obvious is a very common thing in jokes in spanish speaking countries. A popular joke involving avocado is used to show a slow or dim-witted attitude towards something: "What is green on the outside, green on the inside, and has an Avocado seed on the middle?
